Introduction
United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), the UN’s flagship catalytic blended financing platform, supports market development by enabling access to finance in high-risk environments through financial instruments, mechanisms, and advisory services. With a unique mandate, UNCDF blends and deploys grants, loans, and guarantees alongside related advisory support.
UNCDF’s Shafal – Remittance Management for Socio-economic Stability of Migrant Families programme aims to improve remittance utilization, financial inclusion, and entrepreneurship in migrant communities, with support from the Embassy of Switzerland. Building on the successful onboarding of seven new private sector partners in 2026, Shafal now seeks to bring its ecosystem directly to migrant workers and their families across six districts through a community-facing fair aimed at promoting better remittance practices through digital finance in migration-prone areas.
“Remittance Utsab,” meaning “festival” in Bengali, is a six-district financial inclusion fair scheduled over a two-month period, with one event held in each district. The fair brings together banks and non-bank financial institutions, MFS providers, digital service providers focused on financial management and entrepreneurship, NGOs, government agencies, private sector innovators, and UNCDF’s Shafal project-supported entrepreneurs into a single, immersive, community-facing event for migrant workers and their families. It is designed around the theme: “টাকা আসে, ভবিষ্যৎ গড়ে” – “Money Arrives, Futures are Built.”
• To connect migrant workers and their families with formal digital remittance channels, savings products, and financial planning support across six districts.
• To demonstrate the offerings of partner banks, MFS providers, government agencies, and private sector partners to migrant families and returnees.
• To create a marketplace for Shafal-supported entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their products and services.
• To generate measurable outputs: new accounts opened, financial plans initiated, and digital transactions demonstrated.
• To celebrate migrant workers’ contribution to Bangladesh’s economy on the International Day of Family Remittance.
