Inspire the next generation to change the way we travel.
Do you enjoy working with young people?
Are you passionate about sustainability, active travel and creating healthier communities?
Do you thrive on delivering engaging workshops, building relationships and seeing projects make a real difference?
If so, we’d love you to join Team Modeshift.
We’re looking for an enthusiastic Active Travel Ambassadors Coordinator (ATAC) to work with secondary schools across West and South Yorkshire, empowering students to become champions for walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport.
This is an opportunity to inspire young people, influence future travel habits and help schools create healthier, safer and more sustainable communities.
About Modeshift
Modeshift is the UK’s leading not-for-profit organisation promoting active and sustainable travel.
We support organisations across the country to develop innovative travel plans that encourage people to walk, wheel, ride and use public transport for everyday journeys.
Through our nationally recognised Modeshift STARS accreditation programme, we’ve helped thousands of organisations improve travel choices and create lasting behaviour change that benefits people’s health, the environment and local communities.
About the Active Travel Ambassadors Programme
Delivered in partnership with The Bikeability Trust and funded by Active Travel England, the Active Travel Ambassadors programme gives secondary school pupils the confidence, skills and knowledge to design and lead their own active travel campaigns.
Working as a team, students identify barriers to sustainable travel, develop creative campaign ideas and present them to transport professionals at exciting “Campaign Junction” events, where they can secure funding to bring their ideas to life.
Along the way, they develop leadership, communication and teamwork skills while helping their school achieve Modeshift STARS accreditation.
About the role
As the Active Travel Ambassadors Coordinator for West and South Yorkshire, you’ll work closely with secondary schools, local authorities and transport partners to recruit schools, train student ambassadors and support them throughout their campaigns.
You’ll deliver engaging classroom sessions, facilitate exciting events, mentor young people and help schools embed active travel into everyday school life.
Every day will be different.
One day you might be inspiring students in a classroom workshop, the next organising a Dragons’ Den-style Campaign Junction event, meeting local authority partners or celebrating the success of a student-led walking or cycling campaign.
You’ll play a key role in creating lasting behaviour change while helping young people develop confidence, leadership and real-world communication skills.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll:
- Recruit and support at least 17 secondary schools across your region.
- Deliver engaging classroom workshops and ambassador training sessions.
- Mentor student teams as they design and deliver active travel campaigns.
- Organise and deliver exciting Campaign Junction events where pupils pitch their ideas to transport professionals.
- Manage school grant funding and help maximise its impact.
- Support schools to evaluate campaigns and record outcomes through Modeshift STARS.
- Build strong relationships with schools, local authorities, transport operators and partner organisations.
- Share success stories, best practice and campaign highlights across Modeshift’s communications channels.
- Help schools embed long-term active travel initiatives that continue beyond the programme.
About you
We’re looking for someone who is enthusiastic, organised and passionate about helping young people make a difference.
You’ll be confident delivering sessions to groups, comfortable building relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and motivated by creating positive environmental and social change.
You’ll ideally have:
- Experience delivering workshops, training or educational programmes to young people.
- Strong presentation and facilitation skills.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship management experience.
- An understanding of behaviour change or community engagement.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects independently.
- Experience collecting, analysing and reporting programme data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A proactive, self-motivated approach with the ability to work remotely.
Experience within education, sustainable transport, youth engagement, environmental programmes or community projects would be highly desirable, although we welcome applicants with transferable skills and a genuine passion for inspiring young people.
What we offer
In return you’ll receive:
- Salary of £22,000–£25,000 pro rata (£30,000–£34,000 FTE)
- Term-time only working (39 weeks)
- 3% employer pension contribution
- Home-based, flexible working
- Comprehensive training and ongoing professional development
- Laptop and mobile phone
- Modeshift clothing for public-facing events
- Business travel expenses
- The opportunity to build a career with one of the UK’s leading organisations promoting sustainable travel
Location
This is a home-based role covering West and South Yorkshire, with frequent travel to secondary schools and partner organisations throughout the region.
Occasional travel to the Modeshift office in Darlington and national events will also be required.
An Enhanced DBS check will be required for the successful applicant due to the nature of the role.
