ABOUT THE LANDWORKERS’ ALLIANCE

The Landworkers’ Alliance (LWA) is a member-led organisation representing land-based workers across the UK. We are a grassroots alliance of people with a common interest and purpose, bringing together landworkers with a commitment to advancing agroecology and food sovereignty. We are committed to democratic ways of working, in which members do not simply receive services, but are actively involved in shaping the politics and work of the organisation.

The LWA has over 2,300 landworker members, 375 in the Cymru Branch called Gweithwyr y Tir, and is itself one of the 180+ member organisations of La Via Campesina, which represents over 200 million peasants, farmers and agricultural workers across 81 different countries. Our membership spans landworkers who own their land, those who are tenant farmers, and those who are landless producers working on someone else’s land. Some of our members are business owners who employ other landworkers, some are self-employed and work alone, some are in workers’ cooperatives and community businesses, and others are employees or aspiring landworkers who are in training or voluntary positions.

We work to improve the livelihoods of our members and to build a better food, farming, forestry and land-use system for everyone, which is rooted in agroecology and food sovereignty.

We envision a food, farming, forestry and land use system which regenerates the Earth and doesn’t compromise the ability of people, now and in future generations, to meet their needs.

Our strategic aims for 2026-2030 are:

  1. Build more sustainable, equitable and accessible livelihoods for landworkers
  2. Strengthen networks of solidarity, connection and collective action
  3. Tell the story of how agroecology, food sovereignty and sustainable forestry can build a better world
  4. Develop a resilient, effective and democratic union

You can find our full five year strategy here, available to read or listen to, and we would encourage all applicants to use their understanding of this key document to inform their application.

MODE OF WORKING

The LWA staff team all work remotely across the UK. We do not have a centralised office but staff are occasionally required to attend in person meetings at various locations around the UK. Reasonable travel costs will be covered in addition to the salary. Candidates must have the skills and confidence to work remotely as part of a diverse team and demonstrate a proven capacity to self-manage and work autonomously.

LWA staff design, develop and deliver work plans and projects inline with the objectives, priorities and aims set out in our five year strategy.

We work together in a flat-structure where members of the staff team work as equals, rather than in traditional hierarchies of managers and those being managed. Management is recognised as a function, not a status, which is fulfilled through collective responsibilities around support, accountability and evaluation. LWA is committed to pay parity: everyone is paid the same for their time. We have adopted sociocracy as a model for how we work and make decisions as a staff team. In addition to specific job responsibilities of the role, all staff are expected to contribute to this collective management system which may well mean stepping into areas of shared responsibility beyond the specific remit of their job role. All staff are also expected to participate in our staff away days, our AGM and member-led events where possible. They may also be asked to represent the LWA at external events pertinent to our movement.

We work to create a supportive working environment that accommodates staff with caring roles, in particular those with child care responsibilities, and/or other responsibilities or needs. We can offer flexible working hours within the working week, and are willing to negotiate additional unpaid leave over the school summer holiday period.. We offer 28 days pro rata paid holiday, inclusive of bank holidays; we also offer a bonus additional paid week of annual leave around Christmas and New Years to support all staff to be able to take a break and holiday over December-January. LWA has an enhanced sickness leave policy.

We are committed to our Equality and Diversity Statement and we welcome and encourage applications from anyone interested in this role who feels they have the relevant experience and skills. We would like to particularly encourage those from under represented and marginalised groups to consider applying for this role.

The use of personal IT equipment is required for this role. If this poses a challenge for you we encourage you to get in touch (contact details below) as we do not wish this to be a barrier to applying.

Role Overview

The Cymru Policy & Campaigns Coordinator is a dynamic role which involves advocating for the needs and interests of our members in Cymru, and working with the national government to guide the agricultural transition in Cymru in a way which supports agroecology, food sovereignty and sustainable land use.

This role will work closely with key stakeholders in the Senedd and the food and farming movement in Cymru to build relationships and collaborations to amplify our collective voice to promote agroecology, food sovereignty and sustainable land use.
