WildFish
WildFish is looking for freelance professional ecologists and invertebrate specialists to join our growing SmartRivers network, delivering paid, ad-hoc work in either or both of the following:
1. Training delivery
Travel to community groups around the country to deliver SmartRivers training – teaching volunteers sampling techniques and identification using SmartRivers tools. Training kit provided, expenses covered.
2. Invertebrate sample analysis
Analyse aquatic invertebrate samples sent in from groups across the UK, to species level where possible, as part of our twice-yearly monitoring cycle. Work with a wide range of species and sites you might not otherwise encounter.
What we’re looking for
- Background in aquatic ecology, with strong invertebrate ID experience to species level
- A workspace/lab to complete sample analysis
- Quality control process for your analysis operations
- Driving licence and access to a car
- Comfortable working independently and to a consistent protocol
- Available for ad-hoc bookings across the year

SmartRivers is WildFish’s scientifically robust citizen science toolkit. It trains volunteers to collect professional-grade river health data, generating results that match the standards used by regulatory bodies – helping bridge critical gaps in UK river monitoring caused by ongoing resource constraints.
