About the Project
Keele University’s Leverhulme-funded Sustainable Rural Futures Programme (SURF) will train a new generation of interdisciplinary rural researchers to tackle contemporary rural challenges.
The Leverhulme Trust is keen to support scholars form under-represented groups to study for a Masters and a PhD. We are inviting UK-domiciled applicants from either low-income and/or black heritage backgrounds to apply for a 5-year award.
Scholarships are available for scholars to enrol in one of the following PGT programmes in October 2024.
1.MRes Social Science Research Methods
2.MA Human Geography and Sustainability Research
3.MA Global Media and Culture
4.MA Creative Writing
5.MA English Literatures
6.MRes Humanities (History)
7.MSc Geoscience Research
8.MSc Biodiveristy and Conservation
9.MSc Environmental Sustainability and Green Technology
On completion of the Masters programme, scholars will be enrolled on to a PhD programme. PhD study will research a contemporary challenge facing UK rural communities and will align with at least two SURF themes: Landscape, Land use, Lifestyle and Livelihood.

Eligibility
Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2.1 honours degree.
Leverhulme Trust criteria for Masters plus scholarships are:
1. Black African, Black Caribbean, Black Other, Mixed White and Black Caribbean, Mixed White and Black African or Other mixed background (including Black African, Black Caribbean or Black Other) heritage
2. Receipt of full maintenance loan or Special Support Loan during your undergraduate study
These scholarships are only available for UK domiciled applicants

Funding Notes
Funding is available for up to 3 scholarships (minimum of one starting in October 2024).
All scholarships include £10,000 allowance to support research activities and training.
Scholars will also benefit from funding to support cohort building activities.
