A Day in the Life… 

The Office of Human Rights and Equity (HRE) seeks one undergraduate or graduate student to coordinate, plan, and attend Brock’s annual Ability Empowerment Day in 2025. HRE is a resource for all Brock community members, which includes students, staff, and faculty. HRE addresses human rights, harassment and discrimination that are connected to the Ontario Human Rights Code, and all job applicants are encouraged to review the HRE website. HRE upholds human rights laws and policies, and provides equity services to staff, faculty, and students by advocating on behalf of individuals and groups of people, by providing education through workshops and other venues, and by offering guidance to those seeking to implement equity in their own working and learning spaces at Brock. HRE sees great value in the peer-to-peer leadership model and student advocacy regarding human rights, as student leadership creates a more inclusive, safer campus for everyone.

The Ability Empowerment Day Student Coordinator will have flexibility in determining their preferred work location, but ideally will be available both online and in-person at the St. Catharines campus of Brock University. The successful candidate will receive a complete orientation including job expectations, understanding anti-oppression through an intersectional framework, universal design for learning, as well as requisite information about Brock University and Ability Empowerment Day. This position will report to, and work daily with, the Accessibility and Inclusion Advisor. 

As the Ability Empowerment Day Coordinator, Student you will: 

  • Create and deliver a hybrid event targeted at high school students with Disabilities across the province;
  • Assist in event planning, budgeting, development, and post-event evaluation;
  • Prepare written materials, agendas and minutes;
  • Conduct outreach and recruitment activities to academic and administrative departments across campus;
  • Recruit, organize, and train, student volunteers;
  • Liaise with campus and community partners including select High Schools, the Anti-Ableism and Mental Health Committee and Ability Empowerment Planning Committee;
  • Attend online bi-weekly meetings;
  • Attend online training opportunities in Universal Design for Learning and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.

What you need to Succeed… 

  • Be a current Brock University undergraduate or graduate student at the start of employment;
  • Demonstrated interest in accessibility through voluntary, activist, or advocacy activities;
  • Personal intercommunication skills;
  • Public presentation skills;
  • Critical thinking and research skills;
  • Demonstrated competency in digital accessibility;
  • Awareness of Disability Justice Principles and applications;
  • Accessible social media content development and delivery;
  • Online video conferencing;
  • Accessible event planning experience/know-how;
  • Time management;
  • Ability to work in collaboration with a dynamic team;
  • Ability to work independently, problem solve, and take initiative.

Preferred or Asset Skills: 

  • Previous similar employment experience;
  • Lived experience as members of Disabled Community.

Salary and Benefit Information 

  • $22.40 per hour
