BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the
world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their
lives. At work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to restore safety,
dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home.


SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK:
The IRC in New Jersey seeks
volunteer instructors to support English language learning among recently
arrived adult refugees and immigrants who have fled persecution in their home
country and are rebuilding their lives in New Jersey. IRC will hold 1.5-hour morning,
afternoon, or evening classes twice a week. Volunteers must commit to teaching
a selected schedule every week for 10 weeks long session for at least 6 months.

DESIRED QUALITIES:
Experience teaching ESOL/EFL to adults in group settings.
TESOL certificate or working towards receiving a TESOL certification is preferred.
Familiar with Zoom and other teaching related platforms.
Experience working with adult students from a variety of backgrounds, including those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills.
Excellent classroom management skills and confidence facilitating both large and small groups.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
Reliable, responsible, and dedicated to the position until the end of the session.
Fluency or familiarity with Spanish, Arabic, Pashto, Dari, Haitian Creole, or Swahili is a bonus, but not required.

Minimum Qualifications:

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Facilitate small to large group
instruction using provided curriculum.
Familiar with using Zoom to conduct
classes and engage learners in the online class setting.
Design
customized lesson plans based on provided curriculum to meet students’
learning needs.
Facilitate
and support technology skills through online lessons to low digital
literacy skills students.
Promote
core competencies of English language skills needed to obtain and retain
employment and achieve self-sufficiency.
Create
a welcoming environment that fosters community and learning among program
participants while interacting with diverse population.

Record
attendance and prepare lesson materials effectively.
Timely documentation and submission of
the Teacher Log after each class.
Available to travel to the work
site to teach classes is preferred.
Communicate with Education and Learning staff to evaluate
student progress, define weekly lesson objectives and summarize student
learning outcomes.
