Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking two interns for the Sydney office. Ideally, interns will be available for a minimum of two days and maximum of three days a week, for three months beginning in mid August 2024 through October 2024 (dates and schedule are flexible) with the possibility to extend.
Interns will be offered a range of tasks that cover elements of the work carried out by both the Advocacy and Development and Outreach Departments. Interns will focus on projects surrounding domestic and international issues of Australia. Throughout the internship term, interns are offered the opportunity to participate in the collegial atmosphere of all aspects of daily Sydney Human Rights Watch office activities. When possible, interns are invited to join weekly HRW staff meetings, online meetings with global development colleagues, and to attend external HRW events, which could include donor meetings, receptions, or public briefings.
Responsibilities:
Each intern will have a variety of tasks across both Departments such as:
- Conducting background desk research and fact-checking;
- Assisting with preparation of published materials, e.g. op-ed, dispatches, press releases and daily monitoring of news and current affairs;
- Monitoring press coverage and updating lists;
- Assisting with outreach tasks regarding human rights in the Asia region, with a particular focus on Australia;
- Using databases and supporting with tasks relating to event planning; and
- Other projects may be assigned as they arise and when they match the intern’s interests.
Qualifications:
- Interns must be currently enrolled students for the duration of the internship.
- This position is best suited for individuals interested in interning in a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable with a strong interest in international human rights.
- Experience with fundraising, media, social media, government relations, event planning, and Salesforce would be beneficial. Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office) are strongly preferred.
