ESL 140: Academic Bridging in English

Broad range of extended authentic written and oral passages with an emphasis on critical listening and reading. In speaking and writing, importance is placed on: fluent and accurate oral production in a variety of situations such as interviews and speeches, organization and synthesis of information from different sources, and expansion of formal writing skills to include research reports and expository essays in various organizational patterns.

Master’s degree in second language teaching, TESL or related discipline. Two years of experience teaching ESL at the college/university level. Previous experience teaching this course or an equivalent ESL course. Experience with team-teaching. TESL Certification or equivalent.

Mandatory Writing Evaluation Benchmarking Workshop:

Please note that attendance at an ESL0140 Writing Evaluation Benchmarking Workshop will be mandatory for all instructors. This workshop will be offered online through Zoom or Microsoft Teams. 

This workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, March 5, 2025, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. In the event that the workshop facilitator becomes unavailable due to unforeseen circumstances, an alternative date of Wednesday, March 19, 2025, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. has been set.

Instructors will be compensated for participation at APTPUO training rates ($49.03 per hour).

Please note:

  • This course is offered exclusively on the University of Ottawa campus and requires in-person instruction.
  • Professors teaching the same section mutually agree upon teaching schedules. In circumstances of limited sections on offer and/or conflicting schedules among professors, the unit reserves the right to select professor teaching days for a given section.
