Aspen Project Officer

Help secure the future for one of Scotland’s scarcest native trees

As Aspen Project Officer, you’ll play a key role in creating a connected aspen network across the Cairngorms National Park, helping strengthen this remarkable species and the wildlife that depends on it. You’ll combine fieldwork, data analysis and collaboration with landowners, volunteers and partners to guide practical action on the ground. From protecting vulnerable aspen stands to identifying opportunities for new planting and habitat connectivity, your work will help restore resilient landscapes for nature.

  • Analyse aspen survey data and mapping to identify priority areas for restoration and develop a strategic Park-wide aspen network.
  • Survey vulnerable aspen stands and work with landowners and managers to implement practical measures from herbivore impacts.
  • Identify opportunities to improve habitat connectivity through new planting and woodland management, helping create a resilient aspen network across the National Park.
  • Build positive relationships with landowners, managers, volunteers and partner organisations to turn plans into practical restoration action.
  • Use GIS mapping and field data to support decision-making, monitor progress and communicate project outcomes.
  • Support volunteers through training, site visits and practical restoration activities, helping build skills and enthusiasm for aspen conservation.
  • Work with specialist partners to maximise benefits for the rare wildlife that depends on aspen.
