Use our total rewards calculator: https://www.hw.ac.uk/about/work/total-rewards-calculator.htm to see the value of benefits provided by Heriot-Watt UniversityDetailed DescriptionThe School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS) is looking to recruit an Assistant/Associate Professor in Architectural Engineering on a ‘Teaching and Research’ or ‘Teaching and Scholarship’ contract to work at our Edinburgh campus. The Architectural Engineering teaching team delivers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Scotland, Dubai and online.We are particularly encouraging applications from candidate with a growing international recognition and expertise in any one of the following areas:

  • Building services technology and design
  • Lighting and electrical services
  • Water supply and drainage
  • Ventilation and air-conditioning
  • Sustainable/low carbon building design

In addition to the above any of the computational and data analysis skills are also relevant. These skills include:Programming Skills: Proficiency in building design and analysis software such as IES, EnergyPlus, HEVACOMP and programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, for data analysis and modelling.Statistical Analysis: Understanding statistical methods for data analysis and interpretation.Numerical Modelling: Proficiency in using numerical modelling tools for solving complex engineering problems.Applications are encouraged from academics with an established reputation in their field, demonstrating an excellent career in research and/or educational achievements. Contributing to leadership and collaborative working skills, to continue to build on their success, and supporting the development of the EGIS team, creating new and future opportunities for the School and University.Key Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe post-holder will be required to:Teaching/Pioneering Education:

  • Design, develop and deliver undergraduate/postgraduate modules in Architectural Engineering.
  • Incorporate opportunities for practical experience through internships, research projects, and industry placements.
  • Develop innovative teaching methods and materials that engage students and enhance their learning experience.
  • Supervise student projects by providing guidance to students in their research projects, theses, and dissertations.
  • Provide academic and career advice to students (Mentoring students).
  • Assess student learning through the development and provision of assessments for evaluating student performance.
  • Use appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods. At Heriot Watt this includes use of Canvas VLE, block teaching, lecture-theatre-based recordings, and meeting our policies of anonymous marking, online feedback, etc.
  • Contribute to curriculum development by participating in curriculum review and development processes.

Research (T&R track only)

  • Conduct original research by designing and executing research projects, often in collaboration with other researchers or external partners.
  • Publish research findings by sharing research outcomes through peer-reviewed articles, conference papers, and books.
  • Secure research funding by actively seeking funding sources, such as government grants, industry partnerships, or donations.
  • Mentor research students by supervising graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and undergraduate research assistants.
  • Collaborate with educational institutions, industry and government by engaging with external stakeholders to address real-world challenges relating to low carbon buildings and to inform learning and teaching strategy.

Service:

  • Serve on committees by participating in departmental, faculty, and university committees.
  • Review research papers and grant proposals
  • Engage in outreach activities (e.g. public lectures, workshops, and community engagement initiatives).
  • Promote the field by representing the university and the field of Architectural Engineering at conferences, workshops, and other events.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Handle administrative duties such as course scheduling, student advising, and grant reporting.
  • Stay up to date with the latest advancements in the field through conferences, workshops, and continuing education.
  • Build and maintain relationships with colleagues, researchers, and industry professionals.

The successful candidate will be based at our Edinburgh campus in the UK, but occasional visits to other campuses may be required on a need basis. We encourage applications from under-represented groups.Education, Qualifications and ExperienceThe ideal candidate should have:

  • The relevant experience to engage and innovate in our Architectural Engineering degree programmes
  • The drive and commitment to contribute to the expansion of our successful programmes.
  • Track record of research funding and publications ‘or’ evidence of developing and applying innovative and appropriate teaching approaches
  • the ambition to build a world-class academic group and have the experience to supervise PhD students and post-doctoral researchers.

Essential Criteria

  • A strong background in engineering (mechanical, electrical, architectural/building services, environmental)
  • A PhD in a relevant built environment related field
  • Track record of research with internationally recognised publications (teaching and research track only)
  • Track record of winning research funding (teaching and research track only)
  • Skills to deliver innovative teaching within the discipline as well as effectively supervise MSc students
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamworking skills
  • Track record of managing a team of PhD students to successful completion of their research studies and post-doctoral researchers to successful completion of their research project (teaching and research track only)

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of working with industry
  • Track record of delivering innovations in teaching and research
  • Membership of appropriate professional and/or academic societies
  • Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy
  • Ability to operate at the cross-disciplinary boundaries of construction and related fields
