The Department’s core intellectual aim is to sustain a rich and welcoming environment as a methodologically and theoretically pluralist department with a broad and inclusive understanding of what it means to undertake research and teaching in Politics and International Studies. Our research, teaching, engagement and impact activities focus on the interactions between individuals and the governance structures that shape their experiences of the world, locally, nationally, regionally and globally. Collectively, we research and learn about political, ideological, economic, social and cultural structures that often prevent individuals’ lives from being the best they could be, the struggles through which everyday life is reproduced, the resistance that forms to the working out of institutional logics, and the visions of the future that follow from asking how things might be different. At Undergraduate level we offer single-honours degrees in Politics and Politics and International Studies; we administer several joint degrees (Politics and Sociology, Politics and French/German/Hispanic Studies/Italian, PAIS with Chinese); and we are involved in the teaching of several more (EconPAIS, History and Politics, PPE, PAIS and GSD, and PPL). We are committed to strengthening our equality, diversity and inclusion agenda in relation to our community (students and staff), our research and teaching practices, and our curricula.
