Contract: Full time (1FTE), open EndedDetailed descriptionAs part of our new Global Research Institute (GRI) in Health and Care Technologies at Heriot Watt University, the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS) wishes to recruit an Assistant (G8) or Associate (G9) Professor specialising in the development of Technologies for Experimental Medicine. We are particularly keen to recruit an individual with interests in developing technologies for experimental medicine in the human lung, as this is the primary focus of our new EPSRC Research and Partnership Hub in Microscale Science and Technology to Accelerate Therapeutic Innovation (MicroTex).Key duties and responsibilitiesResearch Leadership:
- Lead research in biomedical engineering, with a particular focus on developing technologies for experimental medicine, and their translation.
- Establish and pursue new research areas and funding opportunities that align with the strategic priorities of the School of EPS, our GRI in Health and Care Technologies and Heriot-Watt University, particularly in healthcare technology innovation.
Educational Excellence:
- Develop and deliver high-quality, research-led teaching (including student projects) in the areas of biomedical engineering and enabling technologies.
- Enhance student engagement through the development of industry-relevant, cutting-edge content.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
- Foster interdisciplinary collaboration across departments (e.g., robotics, biomedical engineering, materials science) within Heriot-Watt University and with external partners.
- Establish and maintain strong working relationships with hospitals, healthcare providers, industry, and public bodies to facilitate research translation and commercialisation
Innovation and Technology Commercialisation:
- Contribute to the creation of spin-out companies and startup ventures, aligning with Heriot-Watt’s economic impact goals.
Advocacy and Representation:
- Promote the GRI, the School and Heriot-Watt University as a global leader in health and care technology research and development at conferences, workshops and meetings
- Strengthen Heriot-Watt University as a leading institution for healthcare innovation through participation in key industry and research forums.
Education, Qualifications and ExperienceEssential
- PhD in an area of relevance to developing technologies for experimental medicine.
- A track record in publishing interdisciplinary, collaborative research articles in respected journals.
- A track record in winning research funding (commensurate with career stage, and subject to opportunity).
- Development and delivery of teaching (commensurate with career stage, and subject to opportunity).
Desirable
- Experience of large multidisciplinary research projects.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage a variety of audiences, from academic peers to industrial partners.
- A clear vision for how experiment medicine can transform healthcare and improve patient outcomes.
