The University of Rhode Island’s Feinstein College of Education seeks applicants for a tenure-track assistant/associate professor in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Bilingual/Dual Language Education. This is a full-time, nine-month appointment beginning in Fall 2025. The search committee is particularly interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and/or service, will enhance the College’s commitment to anti-racism, diversity, equity, and academic excellence.

The successful candidate will participate as a core faculty member in a robust and growing TESOL/BDL program that includes faculty with expertise in translanguaging pedagogy, teacher education, functional linguistics, school leadership, language program evaluation, culturally responsive pedagogy, identity negotiation, intersections of policy and practice, and bilingual education. The selected candidate will be expected to conduct scholarly activities, including researching, publishing, and pursuing external funding; teach graduate and undergraduate courses; participate in department and university committees; and develop and maintain collaborative and professional partnerships with local schools and districts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop and maintain an appropriate agenda of research and funding; teach courses related to TESOL and bilingual/dual language education, including, but not limited to second language acquisition, applied linguistics, culturally responsive pedagogy, and methods of TESOL/bilingual education; advise graduate and undergraduate students in the TESOL/BDL program; and engage in sustainable partnerships with local schools and districts to build knowledge and improve practices that serve multilingual students. The candidate may also develop and teach courses and advise students in the Ph.D. in Education program.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform other duties as required.

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Personal computers, printer, word processing, database management and spreadsheet software.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

1. Ph.D/Ed.D. in Education, TESOL, Bilingual Education, Applied Linguistics, Second-language Studies or closely related field at time of appointment.

2. Expertise in TESOL and/or bilingual/dual language education.

3. Demonstrated commitment to and/or experience in equity, social justice, and inclusion in education.

4. Record of scholarly activity commensurate with level of experience.

5. Experience working in educator preparation (e.g., teaching or supervising in educator preparation programs, facilitating professional development).

6. Experience as a PK-12 teacher working with bi/multilingual learners in a school setting.

7. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

8. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

PREFERRED:

1. Successful college or university teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.

2. Three or more years of experience as a PK-12 teacher working with bi/multilingual learners.

3. Bilingual or multilingual proficiency.

4. Evidence of potential for developing, securing, and/or managing externally funded projects.

5. Experience designing and teaching asynchronous online courses.
