Assistant Ecologist

Aurochs Ecology is a small, friendly consultancy based
in Oxfordshire, and we are looking for a new Assistant
Ecologist
 to join our growing team.

Whether you are a recent graduate, a seasonal field surveyor,
or an assistant ecologist with some experience under your belt, we would love
to hear from you.

You will be involved in a wide range of projects, developing your field skills, report writing
and building confidence as a consultant. You will be working closely with experienced
ecologists with a great track record in supporting early-career professionals.

The field-based element of our work means you will regularly travel to sites, including
overnight stays away from home during the survey season. Working hours will include one
night-time survey a week during this period (March to September inclusive) but for any
substantive time over this we offer time off in lieu.

What you will be doing

  • Assisting with habitat and protected species surveys (including bats, badgers, hazel
dormice, great crested newts, and reptiles)
  • Managing and analysing field data
  • Producing graphics and plans using QGIS
  • Helping prepare ecological reports
  • Undertaking biodiversity net gain (BNG) assessments
  • Assisting in project management and client engagement.

What we are looking for

Essential:

  • Positive attitude, good attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.
  • Basic knowledge of UK habitats and protected species.
  • Some field experience (paid or voluntary).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A full driving licence and access to a vehicle.

Desirable:

  • A relevant degree or postgraduate qualification.
  • Experience of using QGIS (or similar).
  • Specific skillset in one specialist area (e.g. plant identification).
  • Protected species licence(s).

What we offer

  • A supportive environment to build your skills and confidence.
  • Regular one-on-one contact and learning from directors and senior staff.
  • Quality computing and survey equipment.
  • A dedicated budget for external training.
  • Flexible working arrangements where possible.
  • An opportunity to establish within a small and expanding company.

The candidate must live within commuting of Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, or be willing to
relocate. However, the role is hybrid, with all staff dividing their work between their home,
sites and an office space.
