The programme consists of a variety of development opportunities and the time to reflect and develop.BackgroundThe Department of Management at the University of Birmingham is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor (Research & Education) in Business Economics. Important areas of research and teaching for Birmingham Business School relevant to the post include: innovation and technological change; the economics of sustainable business; business/industrial economics, industrial policy, and trade. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join us and make significant contributions to the research and education excellence of our university.The Department of Management is committed to play a significant role in a research-intensive Business School by carrying out world-leading research translated into innovative, cutting edge teaching in relevant subject areas that is original, significant and rigorous. Our intention is to be recognised internationally for research and teaching that is of the highest quality and delivers theoretical and empirical insights that are agenda-setting and have a major impact on the economy, policy and society, not least through our students.The Department of Management has a collegial culture, with over 90 faculty organised across four disciplinary groups: Business Economics and Policy; Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Innovation; Organisation, Work and Employment; and Procurement and Operations Management. Research networks flourish within and across these Groups, with the Work Inclusivity Research Centre (WIRC) situated in the Department and several members of the Centre for Responsible Business based there. The Department has a strong and supportive research culture, with regular seminars, reading groups and a healthy PhD programme. Early Career faculty are particularly supported with developing teaching and research.The post holder will become a member of the Business Economics and Policy (BEP) subject group within the Department of Management. The BEP group has a long and distinguished history, going back to the establishment of the Faculty of Commerce in 1902, widely seen as the first Business School in the UK. The group consists of applied economists who undertake a wide range of cutting-edge research in labour market participation, inequality, work and wellbeing, industrial and regional policy, and innovation. The BEP group makes significant contributions to our undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA teaching portfolio. It is anticipated that the post holder will contribute to both our undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.Role SummaryYou will contribute to a range of research, teaching and administration. In addition, you will be expected to demonstrate academic citizenship, developing and maintaining generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students, and ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others can carry out theirs.Teaching is likely to include a substantial contribution to: (a) the management, development (including programme/module review) and delivery of teaching and assessment; and (b) enhancement of the student experience or employability. The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including: (a) providing expert advice to staff and students, (b) supervising and examining PhD students, and (c) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.Research is likely to involve initiating, conducting and disseminating original research. Your research will have measurable outcomes reflected in your growing national (and ideally international) reputation.Management and administration is likely to involve contributions at Departmental and School level, and/or making an important contribution to some managerial/leadership activities (e.g. working groups) within the University.
