The fashion discipline broadly focuses on design research, creative practice, and digital aspects of fashion and is delivered within our UK campus.The School of Textiles has an unsurpassed reputation in advanced tailoring expertise and crafted textiles expertise across knit, print and weave. It now wishes to add to and complement its skills portfolio with the development of Digital Fashion in line with the future direction of the School. It seeks to recruit an enthusiastic and creative individual who has the ability to lead/contribute to the development of digital pattern and garment development processes.This is an exciting role where the successful candidate will work collaboratively across design teams to embed specialist digital fashion expertise and develop pedagogy relevant to a new curriculum, alongside making an active contribution to existing courses across design, pattern cutting and garment construction courses in the Fashion discipline (BA Hons Fashion and MA Fashion).You will possess a strong understanding of contemporary practice, digital fashion futures, sustainability and current debates across the wider fashion industry. This will underpin your passion for enhancing your own practice and will inform your knowledge of the skills and attributes required by graduates for future employability.You will be experienced in learning, teaching and assessment at HE level. An enthusiastic and visionary academic who will support and encourage students to achieve their full potential. You will demonstrate a willingness to engage creatively in the wider activities of the School.You will be highly professional and a committed team player, flexible in approach with excellent communication, timekeeping and organisational skills and be willing to adapt to the duties associated with the role.Our indicative areas of teaching may include such subjects as creativity and design development, digital fashion, sustainability and innovation, and supervision of SCQF level 10 and 11 projects, amongst others.Our indicative focussed areas of research may include such subjects and fields as fashion technology and innovation, sustainability, and digital fashion, amongst others.Key ResponsibilitiesLearning and Teaching
- Undertake teaching duties in relation to courses appropriate to your area of knowledge (e.g. through practical pattern cutting and garment construction sessions, 2D and 3D digital workshops, lectures, seminars, tutorials)
- Contribute to our existing creative practice of fashion design and to the development of new 3D digital design practices at discipline at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
- Undertake scholarly activity related to the effective delivery of the curriculum and develop the level of your subject expertise in line with the latest developments in the fashion design and technology industries as appropriate;
- Contribute to the design and delivery of the curriculum in consultation with the Head of Discipline and within the structures and mechanisms established by the School and University;
- Conduct assessment and moderation across the discipline area, ensuring this is rigorous, fair and clear and undertaken within the policies established by the School and University;
- Identify learning needs of students and define appropriate learning objectives.
- Be responsible for providing constructive and well documented feedback, both formative and summative, to students in a timely manner;
- Contribute to the monitoring of the quality of learning and teaching through course monitoring and to contribute to quality management and enhancement activities across the Programme, School and University;
- Provide appropriate pastoral support recognising the varied cultural backgrounds of the student cohort;
- Make active contributions to the pedagogy of fashion design and 3D digital design education and to ensure that these developments are reflected in the evolution of the learning and teaching methods employed on the Programme;
- Plan and authorise (or revise) new course material as part of the School’s teaching programmes.
- Challenge thinking, foster debate and encourage students to develop and entrepreneurial mindset; engage in critical discourse and rational thinking.
Research and Knowledge Transfer
- Extend, transform and apply knowledge acquired from scholarship to research and appropriate external activities. This activity should be evidenced through a range of high-quality publishable research outputs as recommended and advised by current REF guidance for the Art and Design Unit of Assessment.
- Further disseminate research activity using an appropriate range of media: for example, through external reports, conference presentations, exhibitions of research activity or via short courses for knowledge transfer.
- Participate in institutional or inter- institutional collaborative research or involvement with industrial, commercial and third sector organisations and other institutions.
- Develop and maintain strong links with industrial partners;
- Undertake business development activities and/or consultancy as agreed and directed.
- Continually update knowledge and understanding in field or specialism.
- Translate knowledge of advances in the subject area into the course of study.
Academic Management and Administration
- Undertake administrative duties associated with the programme and course planning, preparation for assessments and for examination/progression boards etc.
- Carry out the administration requirements of the role in accordance with normal University processes and procedures
- Take a proactive role both internally and externally in promoting and marketing the Programmes and the School
- Participate in recruitment and induction to the Programmes with which you are involved, ensuring compliance with the School and University targets
- Contribute to income-generating activities including assisting with raising sponsorship as well as other activities that will raise the profile of the School
- Liaise externally to benefit subject area and student recruitment
- Represent the School in both the national and international context
- Prepare proposals and applications to external bodies, e.g. for funding and accreditation purposes.

Education, Qualifications and ExperienceEssential Criteria
- Minimum Masters Degree in a Fashion related subject.
- Recognised teaching qualification, i.e. PGCert/PGCap or membership/fellowship of Higher Education Academy (HEA). Or be committed to achieving this within two years of appointment
- Teaching and learning experience and/or equivalent industry/professional/ experience and/or relevant demonstratable experience in 3D digital pattern cutting and garment construction utilising CAD/Cam software appropriate to the fashion industry.
- Teaching and/or sound working knowledge of 2D Digital software packages relevant to Fashion and Textile Design and presentation
- Teaching and/or relevant industrial/professional experience demonstrating skills across the entire fashion design process: (Research and development, pattern cutting and garment construction)
- Evidence of understanding of learning, teaching and assessment at HE level
- Evidence of a well-developed knowledge of contemporary practice across the fashion discipline and related areas.
- Evidence of a strong understanding of emerging challenges of sustainability and AI/AR/VR facing the fashion industry
- Evidence of sound understanding of current and future industry needs and the future skills required by graduates for employability
Desirable Criteria
- PhD in a fashion or design related subject
- Industry experience in Digital Pattern Cutting and Realisation, with working knowledge of the fashion industry
- Evidence of professional practice/working within the fashion industry or similar, commensurate with appointment at this level
- Evidence of knowledge in applying Fashion and related design to broader design research/societal challenges
- Candidates may be considered for either Teaching and Scholarship or Teaching and Research role. Candidates who can demonstrate a considerable research track record will be more likely to be considered for a T/R role.
