Durham University
Job description
The Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University is looking to appoint a 0.5FTE Assistant Professor (Education) in Greek and Latin language and literature for a September 2024 start. This post offers an exciting opportunity to make a contribution to the development of the Department of Classics and Ancient History’s teaching and curriculum, while allowing you unrivalled opportunities to progress and embed your career in an exciting and progressive institution. We welcome applications from those with teaching interests in the field of Greek and Latin languages and literature; successful applicants will be expected to teach both of these languages. We also welcome those whose most recent teaching experience is in schools rather than universities. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about teaching modules with a strong linguistic focus, across the range of language modules offered by the Department: Beginners’ Undergraduate modules; Intermediate level classes aimed at consolidating language learning and skills typically gained at A level or equivalent, as well as enabling students to read texts independently; Advanced and Higher reading classes, centred around close reading, including both literary and linguistic analysis, of texts in the original; and Master’s level modules, which equip those MA students who have no prior experience of studying the ancient languages with the skills to read, independently, Latin and/or Greek for research purposes. We are keen to appoint a candidate with an active interest in the pedagogy of language teaching, who teaches languages in a way that is engaging, inclusive, academically rigorous, and innovative. We have a long-standing commitment to teaching languages at all levels, and many of our students choose to study Greek and/ or Latin language; we currently employ three Education Track colleagues and are keen to appoint a fourth colleague to this track. There are opportunities for colleagues on the Education track to work in collaboration with the Durham Centre for Academic Development (DCAD) and engage in cross-disciplinary conversations about education and pedagogy. You will be expected to engage in scholarship related to pedagogy; please note that any other independent research (beyond pedagogy) lies beyond the scope of this post. The appointment will be on the University’s ‘Education’ career path, which provides clearly defined opportunities for progression against defined criteria.Department contact for academic-related enquiriesProfessor Roy Gibson, Head of Department: roy.CompanyCompany info Mini-site Telephone +(44)0191 334 2000 Location MAIN UNIVERSITY OFFICE
