The programme consists of a variety of development opportunities and the time to reflect and develop.Role SummaryWe seek to appoint an Assistant Professor in Heritage and History to develop our strategic priority in global heritage studies, along with our existing strengths in material culture / materialities, area studies and anthropology. The appointee will support the activities of the International Centre for Heritage and bring their own established research strengths with expertise that can support the delivery of programmes across the three departments in the School of History and Cultures (Department of History; Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology; Department of African Studies and Anthropology). The post holder will have a track record of high-quality research outputs with potential to produce internationally excellent and world-leading publications and to develop major grant applications in the area of heritage. The successful candidate will also have a strong track record of engagement and wider impact, or demonstrable ability to develop partnerships with the heritage sector that support high quality research and teaching. We intend this appointment to be area specific, and particularly encourage applicants working on the heritage and history of Asia, the Middle East, Latin America or North America.You will contribute to a range of research, teaching and administration. Specifically, you will contribute to the suite of modules within our two Heritage MA programmes – International Heritage Management (on campus and Distance Learning), as well as developing heritage pathways through our UG curriculum including a new Year 1 module and developing the Year 2 modules Public History and Material Culture as well as the final year/MA Public History Placement module. The post holder will also contribute to the design and delivery of the Heritage Summer School for summer 2025 onwards. While the appointment will be based in the Department of History the post holder should be well placed to collaborate with colleagues across the School in both teaching and research.You will be expected to demonstrate academic citizenship, developing and maintaining generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students, and ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others can carry out theirs.Teaching is likely to include a substantial contribution to: (a) the management, development (including programme/module review) and delivery of teaching and assessment; and (b) enhancement of the student experience or employability. The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including: (a) providing expert advice to staff and students, (b) supervising and examining PhD students, and (c) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.Research will involve initiating, conducting and disseminating original research. Your research will have measurable outcomes reflected in your growing national (and ideally international) reputation.Management and administration is likely to involve contributions at Departmental and School level, and/or making an important contribution to some managerial/leadership activities (e.g. working groups) within the University.
