Basic Function:
The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) at the University of Rhode Island (URI) seeks an exceptionally creative candidate to fill a faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor (tenure-track). We are seeking an outstanding individual with demonstrated research strength in any area of molecular biology and/or cell biology addressing significant biological problems. Candidates with specific research expertise in cell biology, molecular biology (including gene regulation), or microbiology (including infectious disease, host-microbe interactions) are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a high-quality, nationally recognized independent research program with a strong potential for attracting extramural funding. The candidate must also be able to contribute to teaching introductory and advanced courses in one or more areas including microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, or cell biology. Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. degree, a sustained record of exceptional scholarly success, and the promise of future innovative accomplishments within a research framework that utilizes state-of-the-art molecular, genetic, cellular, and/or biochemical methodologies. The candidate is expected to be highly collaborative and able to integrate well with current faculty in the department. Some prior teaching experience is preferred. Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate is expected to develop a vibrant, independent and sustainable research program focusing in cellular/molecular biology, seek extramural funding to support the research program, and publish high-quality research articles in peer-reviewed journals. Teaching duties will encompass courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in the areas of cellular/molecular biology, genetics, and microbiology. The successful candidate is expected to provide research mentorship to undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows and engage in service activities for the department, the College of the Environment and Life Sciences (CELS), and the University community. There should be a demonstrated effort to engage diverse students in teaching, research and service.
Required Qualifications:
1. Earned Ph.D. in biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, biomedical sciences or a related field.
2. Demonstrated ability to effectively teach biology-related courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
3. Strong evidence of scholarly activity, e.g., first-authored publications in peer-reviewed journals, external proposal submissions, and/or awards granted.
4. Demonstrated potential to mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research.
5. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.
6. Demonstrated proficiency in oral communication skills.
7. Demonstrated experience working with members of diverse groups/populations.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Demonstrated postdoctoral associate research experience.
2. Demonstrated experience with participation in one or more cellular/molecular biology research projects that will complement and enhance the existing research in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at URI.
3. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with members of diverse groups for excellence in teaching and mentoring.
4. Evidence of applying for and/or obtaining research funding.
