Assistant Professor of Comparative Politics/International Relations, Politics Department

Position description

The Department of Politics at Washington and Lee University invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant professor in Comparative Politics or International Relations with a regional specialization in Latin America beginning July 1, 2025.

This is a tenure-track appointment with a teaching load of 5 courses per year. The school calendar consists of two 13-week terms (fall and winter) and our unique 4-week spring term. The successful candidate will be expected to teach sections of the Department’s introductory course in Global Politics, 2 sections of applied statistics, and upper-level courses related to the candidate’s field of expertise.

This position requires a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching excellence in a liberal arts environment; as such, evidence of teaching effectiveness is required. We also welcome interdisciplinary contributions to the curriculum. Opportunities will be available to teach in interdisciplinary programs at the University—including Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Africana Studies, Poverty and Human Capability Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies—as well as the DeLaney Center for the Study of Southern Race Relations, Culture, and Politics.

Faculty are also expected to have an active research program. To support faculty research agendas, the university has a summer research grant program, a generous 5-year sabbatical cycle, as well as a pre-tenure research leave program.

Washington and Lee University promotes a dynamic and inclusive environment that allows students and employees of multiple backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives to learn, work, and thrive together. Successful candidates will contribute to that environment and exhibit potential for excellence in teaching and for vigorous scholarship. In keeping with the University Strategic Plan, we encourage applications from underrepresented minority candidates and members of other communities that are traditionally underrepresented in academia.

Washington and Lee is a top-ranked, highly selective university devoted to the teaching of the liberal arts. We are committed to excellence in teaching and to the research and professional activity that support it. Situated in the Shenandoah Valley, three hours southwest of Washington, DC, the university enrolls approximately 1,860 undergraduates and 380 law students.
