Assistant Professor of Intelligence Studies

Position description

The Citadel is a prestigious military college dedicated to developing principled leaders through rigorous academic programs, military training, and a strong ethical framework. Our commitment to excellence in education and leadership development is reflected in our diverse student body and distinguished faculty.

Position Overview: The Department of Intelligence Studies at The Citadel invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position. We seek passionate educators dedicated to teaching and inspiring students pursuing careers in intelligence for the military and U.S. federal government.

As the largest department at The Citadel, the Department of Intelligence Studies has experienced rapid growth, reflecting our commitment to developing new programs and expanding our offerings to meet student needs and the demands of the intelligence community. We aim to attract faculty who can contribute to this growth by bringing fresh ideas and innovative approaches to our curriculum and outreach efforts.

In this role, you will employ innovative teaching methods to stimulate critical thinking and practical application of knowledge. You will mentor students, encouraging them to explore their interests and pursue academic excellence. The ideal candidate will find joy in facilitating discussions, guiding research projects, and creating a classroom atmosphere where every student feels valued and motivated. We seek someone dedicated to nurturing the next generation of leaders in intelligence.

We also value professors who aspire to excellence in scholarship and teaching. The landscape of intelligence studies is rapidly evolving, and we appreciate candidates who stay current with developments, including technological advancements and emerging global threats. You will have the opportunity to integrate cutting-edge research and best practices into your teaching, ensuring students receive a comprehensive and relevant education essential for their future roles.

Collaboration is key in our department, and we are looking for collegial and supportive team members. We value a collaborative spirit that fosters a sense of community among faculty and staff. The ideal candidate will engage with colleagues meaningfully, contributing to a culture of shared ideas, mutual respect, and collective success.

Our department is excited to announce that we will be conducting pre-interview screenings for professor candidates at two major academic conferences this upcoming year, in addition to traditional Zoom interviews. Department faculty and staff will be available for on-site interviews at the Society for Intelligence History’s Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., on February 7-8, 2025, and at the International Studies Association’s Annual Conference in Chicago, IL, on March 2-5, 2025. These interviews serve as a preliminary step before inviting selected candidates to campus for further consideration. Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their application materials in advance to be considered for an interview slot.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in intelligence studies, including but not limited to intelligence analysis, national security, and global security issues.
  • Develop and enhance the curriculum to ensure relevance and rigor.
  • Conduct and publish research in peer-reviewed journals and/or books and present at academic conferences.
  • Advise and mentor students in their academic and professional pursuits.
  • Participate in departmental and college-wide service, including committee work and outreach activities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to strengthen the intelligence studies program and enhance its national and international reputation.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Intelligence Studies, Political Science, International Relations, or a related field (ABD candidates may be considered if the degree is expected by the start date).
  • Demonstrated expertise in intelligence analysis, security policy, or a related area.
  • Strong teaching credentials and a commitment to undergraduate education.
  • An active research agenda with the potential for impactful scholarship.
  • Ability to engage with a diverse student population and promote inclusivity in the classroom.
  • Experience in military or government service is a plus but not required.
