We are now seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor on the traditional research and teaching pathway in an area that strengthens, or expands upon, our current areas of expertise.We will consider applicants with expertise and experience in any area of power electronics, and the post would offer opportunities to develop expertise in device design, fabrication and testing. Possible research areas include but are not limited to: power semiconductor device design and optimisation; power electronic system design and development; wide bandgap semiconductor materials; power semiconductor device fabrication; and power device reliability and characterisation. We encourage applications from candidates with existing collaborations with, and links to, the power electronics industry.Candidates will be expected to teach existing and new modules to the highest quality in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Discipline Stream in the School of Engineering. Such topics will include power electronics converters, semiconductor devices, electrical and electronic circuits, and energy management and power systems.You will be appointed for a probationary period (usually five years) during which there is a reduced teaching and administration load to enable you to establish your research group. Successful completion of probation will coincide with promotion to a permanent Associate Professor position.We will consider applications for employment on a part-time or other flexible working basis, even where a position is advertised as full-time, unless there are operational or other objective reasons why it is not possible to do so.About YouYou will have a PhD in a relevant discipline and must be able to demonstrate the capability to establish an independent research activity which has the ambition and potential to become internationally leading. You will initiate, develop, and deliver high quality research, publish top-tier journal papers, and demonstrate the potential for impact from your research. You will engage with higher education pedagogy and be willing to develop novel teaching methods, embracing changes in teaching technology and expectations.For further information regarding the skills required for this role please see the personal specification section of the attached job description.About the DepartmentThe School of Engineering is a multidisciplinary department which aspires to conduct research to internationally leading standards. The School is currently divided into four Discipline Streams (Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Mechanical, Materials and Process Engineering, and Systems and Information Engineering). The successful applicant will join the EEE Stream.The PEATER GroupThe Power Electronics Applications and Technology in Energy Research (PEATER) group ( ) has built a reputation as a world-leading research group working in wide bandgap power electronics. The PEATER Group’s expertise and capability spans the full power electronics supply chain from semiconductor materials growth to device fabrication, packaging, reliability, and converter integration. The facilities comprise of the UK’s only silicon carbide (SiC) CVD epitaxy reactor, a 125m2 clean room for device fabrication, a semiconductor characterisation lab, and the Driving the Electric Revolution Industrialisation Centre (DER-IC) for Power Electronics reliability and failure analysis. The research group has a long track record of industrial collaboration and impact, with links into the world’s leading SiC Integrated device manufacturers (IDMs, or chip manufacturers), and the UK’s automotive industry and its supply chains.
