The programme consists of a variety of development opportunities and the time to reflect and develop.BackgroundThis Assistant Professor post in Molecular Microbiology will be aligned with two key research themes in the School of Biosciences; Microbiology, and Structural & Molecular Cell Biology. The successful applicant will develop a research programme combining structural and molecular biology approaches to strengthen our excellent track record in molecular microbiology, where current research foci include the molecular mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis, gene regulation and cell envelope biology. All aspects of molecular microbiology will be considered, but we are particularly interested in candidates studying the role of non-coding RNAs in infection, and the role of protein and nucleic acid modifications in virulence and immunity.We offer unique access to first-class instrumentation for molecular microbiology, such as fully equipped microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology laboratories, genomics and high-throughput screening facilities, and light microscopy. First class instrumentation is available for structural biology. At the National Centre for Biomolecular NMR Spectroscopy in Birmingham (HWB-NMR), we host the best biomolecular NMR equipment available in the UK, comprising 1000, 900 and 800 MHz spectrometers as well as an incoming 1.2 GHz spectrometer expected in 2025. At the Midlands Regional Cryo Electron Microscope Facility in Leicester, you will have access to a 300-kV Titan Krios G3 cryo-electron microscope with a direct electron-detecting camera. We also have access to the synchrotron at DIAMOND for small-angle scattering, X-ray crystallography and other X-ray based techniques.The successful applicant will become a member of the Institute for Microbiology and Infection (IMI) which represents one of the largest communities of academic microbiologists in Europe. The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including: (a) providing expert advice to staff and students, (b) supervising and examining PhD students, and (c) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.Research is likely to involve initiating, conducting and disseminating original research. Your research will have measurable outcomes reflect in your growing national (and ideally international) reputation.Management and administration duties are likely to involve contributions at Departmental and School level, and/or making an important contribution to some managerial/leadership activities (e.g. working groups) within the University.
