Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream – AI & Robotics

The Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for a full-time teaching stream appointment in the area of AI and Robotics. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025.

Applicants must have earned a M.Sc. degree in Computer Science or a related field with a focus on topics related to AI and Robotics and must have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. A Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or a related field by the time of the appointment, or shortly thereafter, is preferred.

Candidates must have teaching interests that complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. We seek enthusiastic and innovative individuals pursuing an academic career in teaching AI and Robotics.

We require that candidates have teaching excellence in a degree-granting program at the undergraduate program level, including lecture preparation/delivery and curriculum development; have demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices; and have engaged with students both in and out of a course setting (for example, running seminars, contests, workshops, and engaging with student-run initiatives). Preference will be given to candidates who have contributed to departmental administration (for example, through course coordination or by managing TAs) and have supervised undergraduate or graduate research projects. Candidates must demonstrate strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical practices can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, selected course materials, and course evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing highlighting both excellent teaching and commitment to pedagogical enquiry and teaching innovation. Evidence of strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills can be demonstrated through the teaching dossier, showing ability to organize courses and teaching resources related to the courses, work with other colleagues and with students, and communicate computing concepts in sample materials.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

At UTM we are committed to fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion. With an enviably diverse student body, we especially welcome applications from candidates who identify as Indigenous, Black, or racially visible (persons of colour), and who have experience working with teaching or mentoring diverse groups or students. Candidates must demonstrate, in their application materials, an ability to foster diversity on campus and within the curriculum or discipline, and must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial environment. Candidates must submit a statement describing their contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion, which might cover topics such as (but not limited to): teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities; efforts undertaken to develop inclusive pedagogies, collaboration, and engagement with underrepresented communities; and mentoring of students from underrepresented groups. If you have questions about this statement, please contact Professor Ilia Binder at ilia.binder@utoronto.ca.

Applicants must also arrange to have at least three letters of recommendation (on letterhead, dated and signed) with at least two primarily addressing teaching, uploaded through AcademicJobsOnline directly by the writers. The letters must be uploaded by the closing date.

All application materials, including reference letters, must be received by October 28, 2024. For enquiries, please contact Ossian MacEachern, Chair’s Assistant, at o.maceachern@utoronto.ca.
