Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) – Applied Mathematics (Scientific Machine Learning and PDEs)

The Department of Mathematics at Simon Fraser University (SFU) invites applications for a full-time tenure -track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 15, 2025.

We invite applications from researchers whose research is at the interface of scientific machine learning with PDEs, optimal transport or optimization. Our Scientific Computing, Machine Learning and PDE research group (SciMAP https://www.sfu.ca/math/research/scimap.html) has established strengths in scientific computing, approximation theory, machine learning, the analysis of PDEs, and the mathematics of data. The successful candidate will build on and complement these strengths, develop a vibrant research program, teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels, provide service to the department, and contribute to building equitable, diverse and inclusive environments.

The Department of Mathematics maintains close connections with many units in the Faculties of Science, Applied Science, and others on campus, through long-standing research activities. SFU is a founding member of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), which promotes research, training and outreach in the mathematical sciences across Western Canada. Qualifications:

Excellence in research and teaching is the primary criterion for this position. The successful candidate must:
– Hold a Ph.D. in mathematics or a closely related discipline.
– Have an outstanding scientific record of research at the interface of scientific machine learning with PDEs, optimal transport or optimization.
– Demonstrate strong potential in their future research plans.
– Demonstrate the potential to strengthen the SciMAP group’s research and to teach upper- division and graduate-level courses in applied mathematics.
– Demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
– Demonstrate interest and ability to realize excellence in teaching and the supervision of highly qualified personnel.

The following are considered assets:
– Demonstrated record of research on applications arising in the physical sciences or engineering. Experience in weather or climate science will be an asset.
– Evidence of strong commitment to service to the academic community.

– A statement (a maximum of 1 paragraph) that addresses how the candidate’s research fits with the stated research scope of this position. This statement is optional but is encouraged.
– A complete, up-to-date curriculum vitae that lists the candidate’s education and employment history, publications, conference presentations, funding and awards, student supervision, collaborations and partnerships, teaching experience, and service activities.
– A research statement that describes the candidate’s research experience, goals, and a five- year plan for their research program.
– Three examples of peer-reviewed published scholarly work.
– A teaching statement that describes the candidate’s teaching philosophy, teaching experience, and evidence of teaching effectiveness.
– A statement describing past or potential contributions to enhancing equity, diversity, and inclusion within research, service, and teaching.
– Three reference letters by referees who can comment on your suitability for this position.
– Please indicate your legal status to work in Canada.

Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. The base salary range for this role at the Assistant Professor rank is $104,700 – $133,322 (dependent on experience).
