Assistant Teaching Professorship in Theoretical Chemistry
University of Cambridge
We seek an outstanding educator who will make a significant contribution to our undergraduate course through the teaching of theoretical chemistry. The post is linked with a College Associate Professorship at Downing College, to which the successful applicant will be simultaneously appointed. The successful applicant will have significant experience of teaching core topics in theoretical chemistry at undergraduate level, as well as experience in assessment/examining. Demonstrable enthusiasm for teaching and the ability to engage effectively with students of a range of abilities is a key requirement. Two important aspects of the role are: (i) the development and delivery of computer-based exercises which run alongside, and serve to illustrate, the lecture courses; (ii) the development of the curriculum in theoretical chemistry. As well as delivering their own teaching the successful candidate will be expected to engage in driving forward educational developments in the Department’s undergraduate teaching and, where relevant, the wider University. The role is primarily a teaching position, with very little scope for research, except for the direction of final-year undergraduate research projects. In Downing College the successful applicant will lead small group teaching (‘supervision’) of undergraduates studying chemistry, especially in the first and second years; participate in the interviewing and assessment of potential undergraduates; and contribute to the chemistry community in College. They may also be required to direct studies in Chemistry (advise students on their academic work, and arrange supervisions in other areas of chemistry). They will be appointed to a College Fellowship with associated benefits (including dining rights, annual research allowance and access to an office in College). The successful applicant will have completed (or be about to complete) a PhD in Chemistry, and will have a strong record of excellence in teaching. Experience of small-group teaching would be a distinct advantage, as would be the ability to teach a range of subjects across our curriculum (details at ).Appointment to this Professorship is to the retiring age, subject to satisfactory completion of a probationary period (usually three years), at which point the post-holder will become an Associate Professor. The post holder will be eligible to apply for promotion via the University’s Academic Career Pathway (Teaching and Scholarship) scheme.Applications should include a cover letter, a CV, a statement of teaching experience to date (not more than three pages), and contact details for three referees. You should also include two further statements as follows: (i) How would you contribute to promoting the participation and achievement of currently under-represented groups in chemistry (one page maximum)? (ii) What courses (lectures and hands-on) should be part of a modern theoretical chemistry curriculum (four pages maximum)?Informal enquiries about the position may be made to Professor James Keeler (Head of Department, ) and to Professor Guy Williams (Senior Tutor), Downing College, ).Interviews will be held on Wednesday July 17th.Click the ‘Apply’ button below to register an account with our recruitment system (if you have not already) and apply online. Please ensure that you upload your Curriculum Vitae (CV), cover letter and requested supporting documents in the upload section of the online application.
