Reporting to the Executive Dean, the Associate Dean will require excellent organizational, administrative and academic skills and join a team of dynamic professionals dedicated to promoting student success and providing innovative, market-driven programs. This outstanding communicator and skilled problem-solver will provide guidance and support to students, employees, and partners in order to promote the success of all involved. The Associate Dean will be responsible for the quality of the student experience, including planning, promotion and development, new course offerings, curricula design and review, industry interface and faculty development at Durham’s Oshawa Campus operations. The successful candidate will reflect Durham College’s mission, vision, and values, and bring a track record of consultation and respect for all. The Associate Dean works in conjunction with the Executive Dean towards executing strategic goals and objectives for the Faculty and college. Assisting in the development of programs and partnerships, leading professors and staff in the planning and securing of resources, implementing and evaluating activities related to academic operations, and providing fiscal management and facility oversight are key functions of this role. In addition, the Associate Dean represents the Faculty both internally and externally to various stakeholders/partners and serves as part of the institution’s academic leadership team, actively participating in various institutional planning, implementing, and evaluating activities.The Associate Dean will be responsible for:

  • Supervising, mentoring, and providing orientation to all faculty, as well as leading the recruitment and selection processes for vacancies within the portfolio;
  • Managing the Faculty’s student academic advisement function;
  • Developing strong relationships with industry leaders, government, employers, secondary school boards, and other external partners that support the success of programs and create opportunities for students;
  • Taking an active role in high-profile campus initiatives and participating in a range of committees and groups that help set direction and policy for the broader College academic operations;
  • Supporting the Executive Dean in providing leadership for program growth and development through evaluation of existing courses and curriculum, revision or development of new courses and programs, and participating in program advisory meetings, program reviews, program accreditation, and pathway initiatives;
  • Assisting in the identification of detailed program needs, including specialized space, necessary equipment, and equipment upgrades, classroom/office renovations, etc.;
  • Working with the Executive Dean to forecast student enrolment numbers for all programs for budgeting and recruitment purposes;
  • Being a visible and active champion of Faculty programs and the College at key recruiting opportunities, such as open house, and through external visits to campus;
  • Supporting the Executive Dean in identifying, negotiating, and overseeing academic articulation agreements with other institutions or partners;
  • Participating in the implementation of initiatives established by the College and government authorities as they relate to the Faculty’s academic enterprise, including quality plans, PLAR, General Education, Essential Employability Skills, and the Minister’s Binding Policy Directive on Programs of Study;
  • Supporting Faculty scheduling and timetable development;
  • Promoting effective and innovative instructional methods and encouraging the appropriate professional development for all faculty;
  • Determining, conducting, and documenting all student-related advisement and disciplinary action, when necessary, in accordance with College policies;
  • Participating in the Faculty’s informal and formal academic appeals process and student complaints and conduct matters, as outlined by College policy;
  • Guiding, facilitating, and enabling creative, supportive solutions to foster student success;
  • Contributing to the College’s overall planning and development, including priorities identified in the Business Plan, Academic Plan and Strategic Mandate Agreement, through active involvement in a variety of committees, and sub-committees;
  • Creating an environment that fosters curiosity, exploration, experimentation, and collaboration at the Faculty of Health Sciences to drive creativity, discovery, and progress; and
  • Enhancing the research agenda at the Faculty and providing resources, funding, training, mentorship, and other forms of support to individuals and organizations engaged in research and innovation.

QUALIFICATIONS: * A minimum of a Master of Nursing degree, PhD will be preferred.

  • A minimum of seven years of leadership experience in an academic setting is required
  • A minimum of five years of research and industry experience in the field of clinical, health, or life sciences.
  • The incumbent will have general expertise with and knowledge of Allied Health and Sciences, along with at least current five years of teaching and curriculum development experience in a post-secondary (preferably college) environment.
  • A minimum of five years leadership or relevant experience in overseeing the operation of healthcare facilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging in all matters related to students, staffing and programming.
  • Must have leadership, administrative, and project management skills with a proven capacity to handle tremendous detail and balance multiple functions at any time.
  • Will possess exceptional communication, problem-solving, decision-making skills, excellent time-management and organization skills, and will be competent at setting goals and achieving objectives.
  • Must possess the ability to cope with a demanding workload, remain calm and focused while under pressure, and will be able to deal with a wide range of individuals with diverse backgrounds and needs.
  • Must have skills in conflict resolution and be an advocate for staff, students, programs, and the College as a whole.
  • Must have research and analytical skills to create new knowledge, develop new products/processes, incorporate enhancing technologies or services, and find solutions to complex problems.
