Org. Setting and Reporting
This post is found in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Sudan Country Office. The incumbent will report to the head of the monitoring team, under the overall supervision of the Head of Country Office. The position will be based in Khartoum (Head Office) and has been temporarily relocated to Port Sudan until conditions allow for deployment to Khartoum.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Associate Human Rights Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Researches and collects information pertaining to human rights violations, including their gender dimensions from a variety of sources, including victims and witnesses, governmental and international organizations, CSOs, and media, including social media, to keep abreast of issues/events and provide up-to-date information; assists in the analysis of information, to include the impact on the countries and thematic mandates on the human rights situation in assigned area. • Contributes and assists in the draft of a variety of human rights reports and correspondence relating to human rights matters. • Maintains awareness of updates on the pattern of human rights violations, including major political and legal developments affecting human rights situations. • Contributes to the design, planning, and implementation of human rights training targeting law enforcement officials, and representatives of civil society organizations, including human rights, women, grassroots, youth, and community-based organizations, and others. • Contributes and participates in the office’s advocacy on behalf of victims to establish accountability for human rights violations, including with the relevant duty-bearers, and the international community. • Liaises with government, NGOs, Civil Society organizations, UN agencies, and other partners to create baseline data on the human rights situation, with special attention to vulnerable groups. • Contributes to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables, and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation, and reporting. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field. A first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is an advantage.

Work Experience
A minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible and relevant experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or closely related areas is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and Arabic (both oral and written) is required.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
