Opportunity to be part of a sector leading programWestern Sydney University has established a sector-leading program to strengthen career pathways for casual academic staff by creating the equivalent of 150 full time positions by 1 March 2025. The WSU decasualisation program will play a significant role in reducing the level of insecure work in the Australian higher education sector.With this in mind, the University is looking to recruit candidates it can invest in and develop over the long term, including training over the confirmation period to support candidates to retain stable, ongoing employment.Successful candidates will undertake teaching, while also having the opportunity to develop a research portfolio and contribute to the University through governance activities at the School and/or University level.About the School of Social SciencesThe School of Social Sciences offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including research programs that combine advanced academic knowledge with real-life training to suit a range of career needs and interests in the following disciplines; Geography and Urban Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Criminology, Policing, Cyber Security, Humanitarian and Development Studies, Social Work, Heritage and Tourism, Counselling and Art Therapy. To be successful in the role, you will need to demonstrate excellence in teaching and a high level of energy and commitment to further developing a research profile that is fresh and relevant to the particular discipline.These are full-time, ongoingpositions commencing from January 2025. These positions are based at Western’s Liverpool City Campus, although travel to other campuses of the University may be required.EligibilitySuccessful candidates will be subject to a two-year confirmation period and must provide evidence at the time of application that they:

  • have been engaged as a casual academic for at least 2 teaching sessions within the previous 2 years at an Australian Higher Education institution; and
  • hold or have submitted all requirements for a PhD or other relevant Level 10 AQF qualification; and
  • have not previously held an ongoing position with an Australian Higher Education provider in the previous 3 years.

In addition to meeting the above eligibility criteria, applicants must hold professional qualification in Social Work, qualified practice experience in a social work field and eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) with five years post-qualifying experience, as per the selection criteria.Candidates must submit evidence of the above requirements and any evidence they have of successful teaching results, such as Student Feedback on Teaching survey outcomes, at the time of application.Please review the position description for further information, including the selection criteria.If this sounds like an opportunity for you, we want to hear from you!
