DepartmentThe Department of Biology at the University of York seeks to appoint an Associate Lecturer (Teaching & Scholarship) to support teaching, learning and assessment across the department, particularly in the areas of ecology and quantitative and computational biology.Undergraduate and taught postgraduate teaching in the Department of Biology is blended by design, ranging from directed and independent study, lectures, seminars, workshops and practicals to small group teaching and capstone research projects. Key areas for the successful candidate include experimental design and field research methods, ecological solutions to global challenges, animal behaviour, and skills development in data management, analysis, and coding in the biosciences.The successful candidate will join the teaching and scholarship group integrated within a large academic faculty that delivers highly successful degree programmes with world class student support. The Department of Biology has a strong tradition of working together to achieve excellence in teaching and research within and across disciplines. You will be strongly encouraged to develop and evaluate inclusive and innovative research-led teaching methods and disseminate these internally and externally through presentations, workshops and publications for diverse audiences.A PhD or equivalent professional experience in a relevant Biological Sciences area or equivalent is essential.Role

  • To deliver lectures and lead workshops, practicals, tutorials and other forms of graduate and postgraduate teaching
  • To develop, apply and evaluate innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and materials that create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students
  • To carry out on-going curriculum design and review including teaching content and materials, and contribute to the development of teaching and learning strategies
  • To undertake effectively a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • A PhD or equivalent professional experience in a relevant Biological Sciences area or equivalent
  • Appropriate academic professional and teaching qualification
  • Detailed knowledge in a relevant research area sufficient to develop research-led teaching and provide relevant learning support to students across different levels of academic ability
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience, both orally and in writing, using a range of media
  • Ability to supervise the work of students, provide advice on study skills and assist with learning problems
  • Ability to contribute to the design of course material, content and new teaching approaches in the department and the ability to manage and deliver your own teaching, assessment and feedback
  • Ability to investigate innovative teaching, learning and assessment methods and techniques in the sector generally, bringing new insights to the department and disseminating excellent teaching practices e.g. through discipline or inter-disciplinary groups both within and beyond the University
