Cheesbrough Research Chair in Family and Community Medicine. Applications from full Professors are preferred but individuals at the rank of Associate Professor who have expertise in leading an innovative, independent, competitive, and externally funded research program of an international caliber will be considered. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2025, or a mutually agreed upon date. The initial term of the Chair position will be 5 years with the opportunity for an additional 5-year renewal following a successful review.DescriptionThe Gordon F. Cheesbrough Research Chair in Family and Community Medicine was established to support a scholar recognized internationally for excellence in research relevant to primary care. The Chair holder is expected to lead an applied research program based at NYGH, secure extramural research grants, train graduate students, mentor less experienced investigators, and strengthen a culture of inquiry within the hospital community. A track record of research in an area closely aligned with the strategic direction of NYGH is highly desirable.Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Lead a successful program of research with the goal of enhancing the quality and outcomes of care related to family and community medicine at the individual and system level;
  • Report findings in the peer-reviewed scientific literature and share evidence to support innovation with health care policy makers, planners and the general public;
  • Obtain grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and other peer-reviewed funding organizations;
  • Collaborate with peer researchers and other interested stakeholders;
  • Achieve a tangible impact on hospital staff and physicians, university faculty, and students through collaboration and mentorship;
  • Participate in internal and external committees, advisory groups, and other activities;
  • Influence diverse stakeholders as a spokesperson for primary care research;
  • Become the Research Lead on the Executive Committee of the NYGH DFCM.

Qualifications

  • MD with certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada or equivalent. Alternatively, applicants with PhD or equivalent degree with at least five years of experience at independent research will be considered.
  • Internationally recognized program of research relevant to primary care with track record of external research grants, peer-reviewed publications, and other evidence of impact;
  • Accomplishments consistent with an academic appointment at the rank of associate professor or higher;
  • Interest in building interprofessional research partnerships and demonstrated ability to collaborate with peer researchers and a wide range of stakeholders;
  • Experience with the supervision and mentorship of trainees;
  • Bilingualism in French/English is an asset.

The candidate should be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and eligible to hold an academic appointment within the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. Time for clinical practice is available to candidates who are practicing physicians.
