Following substantial strategic investment from the University of Southampton into new research capacity, we are seeking to make up to two appointments at the Associate Professor or Professor level. The appointment would start on 1 September 2025 or as soon as possible afterwards, and it is intended to grow our research portfolio and enhance our curriculum of research-led education to benefit from recent developments in Mathematical Sciences. This opportunity arises following a significant investment by the University of Southampton to address foundational issues in Data Science with applications to AI and Sustainability. The successful candidate will have an exciting opportunity to influence the research strategy in this area at the University of Southampton.You will be passionate about research and education and will be looking for an opportunity to take your research to the next level in an area that extends the existing research expertise within the School. You will have the opportunity to set the research agenda, establish and lead a research group, and collaborate with colleagues across the School and the University. This appointment is a part of our focussed strategic investment into the computational and theoretical aspects of mathematical modelling and data science. It is intended to enhance and intersect with our diverse research interests, which are represented by world leading research groups in Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics (Gravity, String Theory, Mathematical Modelling), Statistics, Operational Research, and Pure Mathematics. The remit of this position is intentionally broad, and includes gravitational-wave data analysis, large-scale numerical relativity, quantum information, applications of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to theoretical physics and string theory, uncertainty quantification, topological methods, optimisation, Li-ion battery modelling, energy systems modelling.Please note that the presented post descriptors are not comprehensive – if you are unsure if you would fit, you are welcome to enquire through the contact below.The School of Mathematical Sciences brings together a unique range of disciplines across Mathematical Sciences and is committed to tackling the world’s biggest challenges through interdisciplinary research.
