This is an exciting opportunity to join the maternity team at university Hospitals Birmingham. This is a multisite service, providing care for some of the most vulnerable women and families across Birmingham and Solihull. The post holder will have a focus on intrapartum complex care. you will work along side the consultant midwife for midwifery led care and public health. Together you will provide strategic support for the Director of Midwifery and the Heads of Midwifery.The key purpose of this post is to ensure a high level of intellectual and practice expertise is available within the senior maternity team.The consultant midwives will along with the senior midwifery team, drive forward and evaluate changes in midwifery practice to improve the quality of care for women and their families in line with this key policy document along with other national and local policy documents.The post holder will also contribute to the Trust’s Clinical Governance agenda and the National Maternity Transformation requirements, particularly through the provision of advice on best practice and the support and development of staff.The post holder will also promote midwifery audit and research.UHB is a tertiary centre providing care for women with complex needs, it supports a level 3 neonatal unit at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital which is a neonatal cooling centre as well as a level 1 unit neonatal unit at Good Hope Hospital.Main duties of the jobThe midwife consultant post will be characterised by the four principal role functions:
- an expert practice function
- a professional leadership and consultancy function
- an education, training and development function
- a practice and service development, research and evaluation function
The consultant midwife will spend 50% of time clinically facing.The balance of these functions may vary from time to time in consultation with the Director of Midwifery and the Heads of Midwives.Professional Leadership and Consultancy Function
- The post holder is expected to provide visionary, inspirational leadership and inspire colleague, to improve standards and quality to develop professional practice
- Support midwives to realize their full potential as autonomous practitioners valuing normality, whilst being able to recognize and act on the abnormal appropriately.
- Will act as a role model for midwives, students and junior medical staff, being accessible and available for advice, debriefing and supervision.
- Lead midwives to build their confidence in evidence-based practice in order to empower them to challenge the traditional model and so change practice and inspire midwives and doctors to enhance the profile and practice of midwifery.
- The post holder will act as an expert advisor internally and externally, including being an ambassador for the Trust’s maternity service and promoting the Trust as a Centre of Excellence internally, regionally and nationally.
