Based onsite at Diamond, Harwell, OxfordshireAbout UsDiamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.About the RoleWe now have an opportunity for a Beamline scientist/Senior Beamline scientist working in the area of condensed matter physics research. The position is based on beamline I06, which offers polarised x-ray spectroscopy and microscopy.Responsibilities will include:

  • Operate and manage a PhotoEmission Electron Microscope (PEEM) and Low-Energy Electron Microscope (LEEM) facility.
  • Enable novel research in condensed matter physics and physical chemistry, working with national and international researchers and act as a single point of contact for user experiments, providing technical and scientific advice.
  • Collaborate on equipment upgrades and development projects, including taking specific responsibility for certain components of the equipment.
  • Develop an independent research programme in an area relevant to the capabilities of the I06 facilities and disseminate the results through publications and conferences.

*Applicants will be considered at either Grade 4 or 5, depending on the strength of your skills, experience, and qualifications. *About YouYou will hold an appropriate first degree or equivalent and a PhD degree/Second degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, or related discipline.Experience in quantum materials research, electron microscopes, ultrahigh vacuum and polarised x-ray techniques are required for this post. You should be able to demonstrate an established reputation in a relevant area of research along with a track record of developing scientific equipment.As well as experience in the following areas:

  • Relevant PEEM/Electron Microscope
  • Maintaining scientific instrumentation.
  • Scientific data collection.

For the Senior position, as well as the above you will have experience in the following:

  • Synchrotron radiation research.
  • Python programming for data analysis.
  • Supporting scientists in a facility.
  • Effectively engage with and manage a small team.
