Biofuelwatch is a non-profit organisation that provides information, advocacy and campaigning
in relation to the climate, environment, human rights and public health impacts of large scale
bioenergy. We collaborate with other movements and organisations against different forms of
dirty energy, to help bring about a fundamental reform of energy policies. We have a small team
of paid staff and dedicated volunteers.
We have an exciting new position to build and support other groups’ and network’s campaigning
against biofuels for transport, especially in the aviation and shipping centre, as well as
against refinery conversions to biofuels. The focus will be on biofuels made from vegetable
oils (such as palm and soybean oil) and animal fats. Although based in the UK, there will be an
international scope to this work.
We are looking for one or two new staff members (i.e. one full-time or two job-share) who are
passionate about climate and environmental justice and have a proven track record of
campaigning, whether in a paid or volunteer capacity. No prior expertise and knowledge
regarding global biofuel markets and policies is required, as training will be provided.
The closing date for the job is 23rd March at 11:59 PM.
We will inform all applicants after the application deadline whether you have been shortlisted
and invited to an interview. Interviews will be held via Zoom
Job Description:
This is a new position for a biofuel campaigner, with a focus on so-called renewable diesel,
i.e. biofuels made in large refineries from vegetable oils and animal fats. As a biofuel
campaigner, you will develop and implement effective campaigns against incentives, including
blending targets and subsidies, for such biofuels, not only in the UK but also internationally.
You will also lead on campaigning against specific proposal to convert oil refineries to
biofuel production, such as the Grangemouth oil refinery in Scotland. Such conversions are
being pursued as an alternative to closing oil refineries, instead of investing in clean
technologies that create alternative jobs.
You will be working closely with NGOs and other civil society groups that oppose the use of
renewable diesel, including in shipping and aviation, and you will develop links with civil
society groups opposed to destructive oil palm and soya monocultures in the global South. You
will have the support of our experienced Biofuelwatch team to discuss campaign strategies and
materials.
