Job description

About usThe Research Department of Experimental & Translational Medicine within UCL’s Division of Medicine focuses on the role of immunology in health and well-being. Within this, the Centre for Experimental Immunology is recruiting a postdoctoral research fellow to work on a project entitled “How inflammatory resolution shapes long-term tissue immunity”.In essence, we are a research department interested in understanding how inflammation goes into disarray causing chronic inflammatory diseases. For this, we have perfected human experimental models of inflammation, which we carry out on healthy volunteers, old people and patients with chronic inflammatory diseases. Our aim is to understand human immune responses to infection and injury and the impact that chronic diseases have on our health and well-being. Complemented with state-of-the art technology, we also back-translate key findings in humans to mouse models for mechanistic insight. We have a wealth of expertise in working with industry and a network of collaborators to help advance our research aims.In addition to advancing our understanding of immunology, of paramount importance to us is to create a nurturing research environment with a leadership team that seeks to foster the career development and scientific independence of our researchers.About the roleResolution of inflammation is believed to result in the affected tissue returning to the physiological state it experienced before the infection/injury, an area that we are actively researching. However, we are also discovering that following the resolution of various experimental models of inflammation there is, counterintuitively, a re-infiltration of immune cells namely phagocytes, which through their synthesis of lipid mediators, limit tissue injury and bolsters long-term tissue immunity. That notwithstanding, we have limited knowledge of the signals the trigger this post resolution phase as well as the immunological processes that occur throughout it.To investigate this new phase of immune activity that follows resolution, in collaboration with Professor Marko Nikolic of UCL’s Department of Respiratory Medicine, and Professor Arne Akbar from UCL’s Immunosenescence & Ageing Centre we aim to use state-of-the-art scRNAseq on naïve tissues, resolution phase tissues as well as the prolonged novel phase of post-resolution in the mouse lung challenged with St pneumoniae. This, therefore, requires the skills of a bioinformatician to interrogate these data and align them with biological processes uncovered so far in the hope of discovering new biological processes. This role is an open-ended contract with a funding end date of 30/06/2026, in the first instance.
Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Grade 6B with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD Thesis. Also, appointment at Grade 8 will be dependent on experience.About youIt is crucial that you have experience in breeding and managing transgenic mouse colonies and their use in experimental models of inflammation.Experience in flow cytometry, ideally spectral, alongside multidimensional analysis is highly desirable. Most of all, we’re looking for a passionate and creative scientist aiming for professional independence and above all, one who is driven by the desire to discover new things in immunology. For appointment at Grade 8, the candidate will have substantial postdoctoral experience, a strong publication track record, evidence of the ability to sustain independent research and original contributions, and an established reputation in their field. What we offerThis is an exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team working across the Division of Medicine. As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:

  • 41 Days holiday (27 days annual leave 8 bank holiday and 6 closure days)
  • Additional 5 days’ annual leave purchase scheme
  • Defined benefit career average revalued earnings pension scheme (CARE)
  • Cycle to work scheme and season ticket loan
  • Immigration loan
  • Relocation scheme for certain posts
