Job Description:

The role entails providing support to the BPP and Responsible Sourcing Specialist:

  • Support and assist the BPP and Responsible Sourcing Specialist in their role to implement, Best Practice Principles (BPP) Programme, that supports ethical integrity of the diamond value chain with a focus on Environmental, Social and Governance standards.
  • Support with the implementation of other initiatives that support the ethical integrity of the jewellery industry and its value chain, with key focus on the diamond value chain.
  • As part of the De Beers Group’s responsible sourcing workstream, assist in implementing processes, policies and approaches for the De Beers Group Responsible and Ethical Sourcing Policy for Diamonds and for Precious Metals, Minerals and Gemstones.
  • Under the direction of the Specialist, contribute to developing training modules on the BPP Programme.
  • Manage the day-to-day activities in rolling out the BPP Programme and audit process including for new participants as part of the implementation of applicable De Beers Group’s responsible sourcing policies.
  • Review audit reports provided by the third-party auditor of the BPP Programme, including advising on ratings of potential infringements and breaches of the BPP Programme.
  • Under the direction of the Specialist, create and compile reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • When required, support in the delivery of due diligence requirements for counterparties in the context of reputational, human rights and ethical integrity.
  • Assist in collating and analysing data from the BPP SMART System to inform internal and external reporting requests.
  • Under the guidance of the Specialist, support in ensuring the system that supports the delivery of the BPP Programme is maintained, including writing user stories, testing, and verifying key changes that are needed to support the implementation of the programme and its evolution.
  • Assist in human rights workstreams, including assisting with writing the Modern Slavery Act statement

Under the Specialist’s guidance:

  • Supports implementation of the BPP Programme’s requirements for De Beers and industry participants in respect of the diamond value chain with a focus on Environmental, Social and Governance standards.
  • Supports the implementation of the De Beers Group Responsible and Ethical Sourcing Policy for Diamonds and Precious Metals, Minerals and Gemstones.
  • Engages with the third party verifier on reviewing reports and attending meetings to inform the annual programme.
  • Responsible for leading the review of third-party audit reports to ensure compliance with the requirements of the BPP Programme and advises on appropriate ratings of potential infringements to ensure consistency of approach.
  • Reviews corrective action plans when necessary.
  • Under the direction of the Specialist, conducts testing of the development of any infrastructure required to deliver the BPP Programme within the existing IT platform to build bespoke sections devoted to BPP Programme’s participants and users.
  • Responds to queries relating to the programme, audits and/or IT platform issues.
  • Investigates issues impacting consumer confidence in respect of industry ethics.
  • Supports research into key issues, legislative changes and emerging challenges on ethical issues affecting the jewellery suply chain globally, and provides recommendations and solutions for the above strategies for manager decision-making.
  • Supports the Specialist in the roll out of various policies, initiatives and programmes relating to ethical conduct internally and externally in respect of the diamond value chain.

In particular, under the Specialist’s guidance:

  • Supports in the day to day relationships with De Beers clients (Sightholders) and other applicable BPP participants.
  • Contributes to training materials for the BPP Programme and Responsible Sourcing Policies.
  • Coordinates relevant meetings including through securing stakeholder buy in, capturing minutes, following up actions agreed.
  • Supports day to day relationship management with participants in the programme and with auditors.
  • Supports in due diligence tasks as relevant with the Specialist (including due diligence required as part of our responsible sourcing policies and other ad hoc human rights and reputational due diligence requests).
  • Supports the Due Diligence team with due diligence reviews when required for BPP participants.
  • Escalates where necessary any reputational risks to the Specialist.
  • Supports with Human Rights workstreams through reviewing reports and providing analysis on human rights issues and impacts in the diamond value chain.
  • Supports with De Beers Group’s re-certification against the Responsible Jewellery Council’s Code of Practices.
  • Supports on team administration as required.

Communications and Reporting:

  • Creates presentations for delivery by senior staff
  • Delivers reports on key issues as required.
  • Supports with the drafting of the De Beers Group Modern Slavery Act statement
  • Extracts and analyses data for internal and external reporting purposes.
  • Undertakes special projects as required

Qualifications

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential
  • At least one year of experience in ethical supply chains, corporate responsibility, human rights due diligence, international relations functions or similar is an advantage
  • Project and time management skills are essential
  • Self-motivated and proactive at taking initiative
  • Sound knowledge of business principles is essential
  • Numerate with good presentation skills
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Degree or professional qualification in a relevant discipline is essential
  • Relevant work experience in the field is an advantage.
  • Relevant accreditation (e.g., SMETA / BSCI / SA 8000 auditor/experience) is an advantage.
