TITLE: Business Development Manager

ROLE PURPOSE:

The core responsibility of the Business Development Manager (BDM) is to achieve the Save the Children Thailand (SCT)’s funding strategy through the pursuit of strategic funding opportunities as well as the development and maintenance of strategic relationship with key donors and partners. They report to the Strategy, Program Quality and Impact (SPQI) Director of SCT and is expected to work across the Movement (Global Business Partner for Program Funding & Resource Mobilization – Asia, Donors, Members and other Country Offices as necessary) to maintain and develop the SCT foundation’s New Business Development (NBD) practice and standards.

This position will also work closely with the Corporate Partnership and Philanthropy Manger and programs and operations, humanitarian, advocacy, communications, campaign and media (ACCM), awards, and other technical experts from the Program quality and Impact (PQI) teams in SCT to jointly achieve funding ambition to enable SCT to be able to achieve its goals and breakthroughs. Also, as SCT explores new income segments and diversification, this position will also contribute inputs into a digital fundraising pilot in collaboration with other relevant departments or SC members.

Save the Children was founded in 1919 in the UK and is now one of the largest independent children’s right organizations in the world with programs in over 100 countries. Save the Children has been working in Thailand since 1979 and registered as a Thai foundation in 2022. We strive for a world in which every child attains the right to survival, protection, development and participation. At present, SCT’s portfolio includes emergency responses and long-term development programs in the areas of Education and Pathway to Success, Child Protection, Child Rights, Climate Action, and Humanitarian Action.

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Reports to: Strategy, Program Quality and Impact (SPQI) Director

Staff reporting to this post: Program Development and Quality Specialist

Key working relationships:

In Thailand: Executive Director, Director of Programme Operations and Humanitarian, Technical Advisors/Experts, Awards Manager, Corporate Partnership and Philanthropy Manager, Senior Finance & IT Manager, Senior Field Coordinators and Donors.

In the region: Global Business Partner for Program Funding & Resource Mobilization – Asia, other NBD Managers in the region.

The BDM is a member of the Extended Senior Management team (ESMT).

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Portfolio planning and funding strategy development:

  • In alignment with the global Country Strategic Plan (CSP) process, develop and utilize a comprehensive funding strategy that links local, regional, and global knowledge, priorities, and breakthroughs to the relevant donor landscape, with collaboration and input on strategies for corporates and philanthropies from the Corporate Partnership and Philanthropy Manger
  • Identify, research, and disseminate information on new funding opportunities from bilateral, multi-lateral, and other institutional donors
  • Support the cultivation of business relationships with external stakeholders and potential partners for strategic funding institutional opportunities and help shape and contribute to strategies and ambitions for priming or subbing in joint ventures.
  • Pro-actively track and pursue upcoming funding opportunities and ensure proactive donor engagement strategy and processes, in alignment with the regulations set by the Fundraising Protocol and Directly Received Funding Protocol and in collaboration with the Awards Department
  • Ensure key contacts, required formats and donor strategies are kept up-to-date at the country level.
  • Coordinate with Regional counterparts on multicounty and global NBD initiatives
  • Work with SC Members to explore the potential for new donors and other innovative ways to fundraise

Coordinate program design and proposal development

  • Coordinate the development of strategic, high-value, complex institutional proposals or bids, building on global, regional and national SCI Technical and Thematic expertise, ensuring the highest quality products are submitted to the member and the donor
  • Agree with the Corporate Partnership and Philanthropy Manager (and corporate team) on roles and delegation for design and proposal development for complex and/or new programs of selected key corporate proposals or bids
  • Work with SC Members to resource proposal development teams. Serve in various roles on proposal development team.
  • Draft key sections of the institutional proposals, particularly the standard inputs – e.g. capacity and capability statements; country context and programme experience, while drawing on the expertise of technical advisors, operations, finance, HR and security.
  • Represent Save the Children as a generalist, alongside technical experts, in consortium meetings regarding proposal development., if needed
  • Demonstrate sound commercial awareness by coordinating and contributing to Value for Money in proposal development, as required by donors.

Coordinate and facilitate donor engagement

  • Develop and update the institutional donor engagement strategy and plans, in line with the funding strategy, to assist in growing Thailand’s portfolio with a yearly minimum of 5-6 m USD raised
  • Work closely with corporate team to ensure that overall strategy for corporates and philanthropies is coherent and aligned strategically to contribute to new raise targets
  • Support SCT representatives to cultivate excellent working relationships with both traditional & non-traditional institutional donor agencies at regional and country level
  • Participate in institutional donor check-in and visit to project(s) within the national office portfolio and represent the foundation in relevant donor forum where intelligence on NBD opportunities can be identified and promoted in order to build a robust forward business pipeline.

  • Provide inputs and support to the advocacy and communications teams to communicate and market our vision internally and externally
  • Supervise the work of Program Development and Quality Specialist

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Development professional with a relevant Masters’ Degree or a bachelor and equivalent professional experience
  • 5+ years demonstrated experience identifying and securing funding from key government donors, multilateral agencies, corporate donors and/or foundations.
  • Proven record of accomplishment in institutional partnership building, brokering relationships with partners, and engagement at a mid-senior level, preferably in Asia.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with impact at a high level and with a range of appropriate styles for different audiences.
  • Experience of influencing to delivering results within a large complex global organisation.
  • Proven experience of providing creative and innovative approaches in developing new initiatives that contribute towards partnership objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex issues through critical thinking, analysis, definition of a clear way forward and ensuring buy in.
  • In depth experience and knowledge of current thinking and future trends and thorough understanding of international development issues, particularly in the Asia region.
  • Excellent coordination, organizational and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and negotiate clearly and effectively at all levels, and pull together input from a diverse team.
  • Excellent English writing/editing and presentation/communication skills.
  • Capacity to provide guidance to colleagues and partners on how to ensure accountability to donor compliance, regulations and strategic priorities in proposals
  • Experience in coordinating development of large-scale or strategic proposals, including the development of multi-million-dollar project budgets.
  • A desire to sponsor partner and grassroot-led design and to value and treat partners as equal,
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a senior management team, contributing constructively beyond the role’s specific resource mobilization remit.
  • A high degree of flexibility and adaptability in order to respond to changing needs. Ability and willingness to change work practices and hours in the event of major emergencies including travelling at short notice and for extended periods of time.

Desired:

  • A detailed understanding on funding mechanisms for development work such as Save the Children’s
  • Good command of Thai language is an asset

This position is open to Thai and non-Thai nationals. This position will be based in Bangkok (office based, with 2 days flexible per week).
