Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Neural Stem Cells

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta. The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary is inviting applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the field of protein translation in neurodevelopment, including the role of post-translational mechanisms that govern neural stem and progenitor behaviors, at the rank of Associate Professor. The selected candidate will be nominated for a Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) Tier II Canada Research Chair (CRC), which is tenable for five years and renewable once, and will be a full-time faculty member in the Cumming School of Medicine.
Candidates will use ‘multiomic’ approaches to study protein dynamics that underlie the basis of inherited neurodevelopmental conditions. The Cumming School of Medicine provides outstanding support to researchers via state-of-the-art facilities such as super-resolution and advanced microscopy, optogenetics and photonics, and a wild mice colony and behavioral core, with increasing capacity in iPSC biology, single cell and spatial RNA-sequencing, and bioinformatics. The BMB Graduate Program provides an interactive and robust graduate training to the next generation of neuroscientists. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct a vigorous, externally funded research program (for which 75% time will be protected) that augments the existing strengths in neuroscience and neurodevelopmental disease modeling, as well as contribute to teaching graduate topics in neural development and the supervision of graduate students.
Applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent) in Neuroscience or Neurodevelopment and postdoctoral training. A record of research/scholarly activity is required. Research experience in the molecular genetics of neural development, protein ubiquitination and degradation, development of animal models of neurodevelopmental disorders, and protein biochemistry is essential. A competitive year-round salary and an attractive start-up package will be provided. The selected candidate will also be nominated for a Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Neurodevelopment. Further information about the Canada Research Chairs Program, including eligibility criteria, can be found on the Government of Canada’s CRC website.
Tier II Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Candidates who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and who have had career breaks, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc., may have their eligibility for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program’s Tier II justification process. Research interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g., closures) are recognized as, and may be counted as, an eligible delay (credited at twice the amount of time) beginning March 1, 2020. Please contact UCalgary’s Office of Research Services for more information: ipd@ucalgary.ca. Further information about the Canada Research Chairs Program can be found on the Government of Canada’s CRC website, including eligibility criteria.
