ABOUT THE COMPANY:

Nairobi is the headquarters duty station for the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) the United Nations agency mandated with ensuring better urban future by promoting socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement sustainable development goal 11 (SDG 11). Although the mandate of UN-Habitat is global, the agency has placed special emphasis on working for the benefit of the host country through contributing to Kenya’s development priorities in a variety of ways.

UN-Habitat Regional Office in Africa (ROAf) located in Nairobi, Kenya, is supporting priorities of member states and governments to achieve sustainable urban development. Implementation of Kenya programmes is carried out within the ROAf.

 

Result of Service
The ultimate result of service of the consultancy is to deliver the Global Urban Lectures Season 7 and reports and workplans for IUTC partnership and project for 2025.

Duties and Responsibilities

Background to UN-Habitat The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations agency responsible for urbanization and human settlements, mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities.

UN-Habitat helps the urban poor by transforming cities into safer and healthier places with better opportunities.

It works with organizations at every level, including all spheres of government, civil society, private sector and the Habitat Agenda Partners. Background to Consultancy The Global Solutions Division (GSD) is responsible for providing programmatic direction for UN-Habitat and is responsible and accountable for the programmatic delivery of the Strategic Plan. The Division leads the tools and methodology production and the integration of the various substantive competencies toward the effective delivery of UN-Habitat’s mandate and Strategic Plan.

It provides substantive training to staff members and supports the capacity development of Member States and partners.

The Programme Development Branch (PDB) Is responsible for the overall coordination of programme development. It brings together normative and operational expertise supporting high quality integrated programmes that maximize results across the outcomes and the Domains TOR: 24-United Nations Human Settlements Programme-225713-Consultant Page 2 of 5 of Change in the Strategic Plan. It builds on the concrete demands of national and local governments, strengthening the capacity of government and urban stakeholders at all levels to address the social, economic, environmental, and crisis dimensions of sustainable urbanization.

The Branch also focuses on supporting global programme development to strengthen normative capacity and knowledge generation to increase impact and influence, through strategic partnerships.

The Capacity Development and Training Unit (CDTU) transforms knowledge into capacity building products, including practical and problem-solving tools that respond to the needs of governments, cities, technical cadres, urban practitioners, as well as policymakers. The Global Urban Lectures (GUL) is one of the key knowledge products developed by CDTU. GUL is a unique online initiative by UN-Habitat, designed to disseminate cutting-edge knowledge and insights on sustainable urban development.

This platform offers a series of free, high-quality video lectures delivered by renowned urban experts, practitioners, and academics from around the world.

The lectures cover a wide range of topics relevant to urban planning, housing, governance, and climate resilience, aiming to empower urban stakeholders, policymakers, and the public with the necessary knowledge to address contemporary urban challenges. By making this valuable content widely accessible, the Global Urban Lectures contribute to fostering informed and effective urban policies and practices globally.

CDTU works in close collaboration with partners, including training institutions, to enhance capacities for the implementation of the New Urban Agenda (NUA) and SDG11.

The Unit manages the long-standing partnership with the International Urban Training Centre (IUTC), together with the Gangwon State of the Republic of Korea. The partnership aims to equip urban professionals in Asia-Pacific including local government officials to better respond to the sustainable urban challenges of their contexts. Four to six trainings are held annually through the partnership delving into a diverse range of crucial topics from mobility to climate resilience.

With more than 1,800 training alumni over the years, IUTC strives to be an important centre for learning in the region utilizing complementary expertise and knowledge from UN-Habitat, Gangwon State, and their partners.

Qualifications/special skills

Bachelor degree (BSc.

or equivalent) in relevant field such as international development, social studies, engineering, or areas related to urban sustainability or international development 2 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in communications, capacity development, partnership or other relevant programmes is required.

Experience with project management, report writing, and digital tools is desirable Experience working in the UN or other international development organizations is desirable. Experience working with training partners is desirable. Experience working with projects in Asia-Pacific is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

For this consultancy, fluency in oral and written English is required.
