Thoracic Surgery – Saint JohnPosition Description:Our client is centralizing Thoracic Surgery services in Saint John (Region 2) and is actively recruiting full-time Thoracic Surgeons to reach a complement of four FTEs. Join a division committed to collaboration, teamwork, research, medical education, innovation, and excellence in clinical care.The division has access to a recently upgraded, fully integrated MIS Suite, a da Vinci Xi robot, and the Illumisite fluoroscopic navigational bronchoscopy platform. We foster multidisciplinary team collaboration with Cardiac Surgery, Critical Care, Respirology, Interventional Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Radiation Oncology. We also frequently collaborate with ENT and Plastic Surgery on complex oncology cases.Current capital projects at the Saint John Regional Hospital include a new Ambulatory Clinic, ICU, Endoscopy Suite, and Oncology Clinic. The Division actively participates in the CATS (Canadian Association of Thoracic Surgeons) Database.Members of the division are encouraged to participate in medical education programs affiliated with Dalhousie University and other allied health profession training. Academic appointments with Dalhousie University are available. Additional opportunities to engage in medical education can be explored if desired.Job Duties:Conduct an office-based practice, including assessment and management of new and follow-up patients.Provide ambulatory care in a clinic setting.Provide inpatient care, including patient rounds.Provide consultations for hospital-based patients as requested by attending staff.Participate in the on-call schedule, covering statutory holidays, evenings, and weekends.Collaborate as part of an interdisciplinary team and consult with other health professionals as needed.Report all absences-planned and unforeseen-in writing to the Medical Director-Saint John, Department Head of Surgery, and Division Head of Thoracic Surgery.Coordinate planned service gaps in advance to ensure continuous service coverage.Adhere to departmental and corporate evidence-based rules of practice to maintain high standards of care.Participate in departmental and divisional educational activities under the supervision of the Department Head of Surgery and Division Head of Thoracic Surgery.Engage in medical practice aligned with our client’s mission, values, and strategic direction.Undertake other duties as assigned by the Head of the Department of Surgery, Division Head of Thoracic Surgery, Chief of Staff, Medical Director-Saint John, and/or Vice President of Medical Affairs.Contribute to the teaching of health professionals in subjects related to Thoracic Surgery.Maintain all patient records in compliance with our client’s bylaws, medical staff regulations, and policies.Deliver clinical services under an Alternative Funding Program, meeting required clinical deliverables.Demonstrate leadership principles and a commitment to medical education.Enhance clinical care through ongoing development of advanced clinical techniques.Hours of Work:Monday to Friday, 08:00 – 16:00.Remuneration:Alternative Funding Plan (AFP): Competitive remuneration under New Brunswick’s recently renewed Alternate Funding Plan for Thoracic Surgery.Office overhead stipend included in the compensation package.Mandated On-Call stipend provided.Qualifications:Certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Thoracic Surgery or equivalent.Eligible or licensed to practice medicine in the Province of New Brunswick.Eligible or a current member in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick and the New Brunswick Medical Society.Current malpractice insurance from the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) appropriate to the category of practice.Strong communication, interpersonal, and team-building skills.Good attendance and work record.Physically able to perform assigned duties.Incentives:Signing Bonus: $50,000 with a two-year return of service agreement for eligible physicians (as determined by the Department of Health).Relocation Assistance: Moving expense reimbursement of up to $8,000 for eligible physicians.Other Requirements:The physician will provide inpatient and outpatient Thoracic Surgery services and participate in on-call coverage with other members of the Division of Thoracic Surgery. A typical weekly schedule includes:Daily inpatient rounds.Operating sessions assigned by the OR Utilization Committee.Inpatient consultations.Hospital-based clinics.Office hours.Teaching medical students.Performing endoscopy procedures, including Upper GI, Flexible Bronchoscopy, EBUS, EUS with ROSE support, and Fluoroscopic Navigational Bronchoscopy.About the Facility:Our client operates the largest tertiary care hospital in New Brunswick and serves as the primary health care referral center for the region and all New Brunswickers requiring major trauma and cardiac care.This facility houses the New Brunswick Trauma Program, New Brunswick Heart Centre, and New Brunswick Stem Cell Transplant Centre, as well as Radiation Oncology and Nephrology services. It offers autologous stem cell therapyand has a stem cell processing laboratory.The hospital is also the central site for Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick’s distributed medical education program and serves a catchment population of approximately 170,000 people.About the Community:The Saint John area offers a diverse range of affordable housing options, from heritage properties to executive homes within the city and nearby Kennebecasis Valley.
