OLA is committed to equity and inclusion and strives to promote resilience, wellness, personal growth and social responsibility among our learners.As a Career Counsellor, you will provide individual and group career counselling services to Undergraduate and Graduate medical trainees across the St. George and Mississauga campuses, who are diverse in age, culture, race, gender, sexual identity, and educational background. You will develop career resources and establish collaborative networks with University of Toronto and external career development/counselling agencies in order to help ensure that our learners are well positioned and prepared for progression through the continuum of medical education and into medical practice.Your responsibilities will include:

  • Counselling and advising medical students on career development by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances and an understanding of an individual’s background
  • Exploring a variety of career related topics with medical learners, such as transitions to post graduate training, career decision making, alternative and hybrid careers, transitions to the workforce, medical degree opportunities, developing a professional brand and career narrative interview strategy, document preparation, and other career related concerns
  • Developing and delivering learning outcomes and relevant, engaging career content for workshops and evaluating programs
  • Keeping well informed on labour market, occupational and educational work trends and theories related to equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Conducting a detailed analysis of student feedback and labor market research to inform program planning activities.
  • Screening for referrals for academic advising and with other counselling services for students in distress

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in counselling or equivalent education and experience, related to career development and advising
  • Minimum five years’ experience working with students in professional health-care-related post-secondary educational/training programs
  • Demonstrated understanding of case management and referral best practices
  • Demonstrated experience in career counselling, development, and/or advising on an individual or group basis
  • Knowledge of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and its community partners, including application of its policies and procedures
  • Experience and aptitude for designing and creating high- quality career related resources in a range of formats
  • Experience providing document review support, such as Cover Letters, Resumes, CV’s, Personal Statements, and Professional Social Media
  • Experience building and sustaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including external career development/counselling agencies
  • Experience building and administering presentations to small and large audiences
  • Research experience or demonstrated proficiency in evaluation/quality assurance
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite
  • Excellent (oral and written) communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated skill/aptitude in cross-cultural communication and inter-professional group facilitation
  • Tolerance for ambiguity and an ability to adapt to change quickly
  • Self-directed with ability to work independently and set priorities in an environment with peak service periods, deadlines and varying schedule demands
  • Demonstrated decision-making skills in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Tact, discretion, sensitivity to confidential matters
  • Ability and willingness to travel between the St. George and Mississauga campuses
