Course description: This course develops students’ communications skills focusing on the specific skills required for work in foundational civil engineering. Target communication areas include: Oral Presentation; Logical Argument; Document Development; Sentence and Discourse Control; and Visual Design. The course will build capacity in support of specific assignments delivered in other courses in the same term. This is a .2 weighted course.Posting end date: July 17, 2024Number of Positions (est.): Up to five (5)Estimated TA support: TA consultation will be available from partner engineering courses as required.Estimated course enrolment: 110 students, in sections of approximately 30 students each.Class schedule: Students attend 1 one-hour lecture and 1 one-hour tutorial per week (Schedule TBA). The course typically runs eleven weekly sessions over the course of the terms (final schedule TBD).Dates of appointment: September 1, 2024– December 31, 2024Hours: 60% HCE (up to a maximum of 138 hrs)Salary: CUPE minimum salary rates for a half course (HCE), inclusive of vacation pay, are: Sessional Lecturer 1 – $9,457.90; Sessional Lecturer 1 Long Term – $9,930.79; Sessional Lecturer 2 – $10,121.77; Sessional Lecturer 2 Long Term – $10,326.62; Sessional Lecturer 3 – $10,362.76 and Sessional Lecturer 3 Long Term – $10,570.02. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail.Minimum Qualifications: include at least a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Communication, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies) with strong written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.Preferred Qualifications: include a PhD in an appropriate discipline (as above), and TESL or other training/certification in second-language instruction at the university level, and familiarity with engineering communication practices, and experience as an instructor in first year foundation course, Engineering Strategies and Practice.
