We are looking for a motivated, high-performing, and collaborative team member to join us as a Climate Change Consultant. In this position, you will support the Paris Agreement alignment (PAA) of IDB operations and the development of capacity building programs across different sub-regional contexts and sectors such as: energy, transportation, water and sanitation, agri-food systems, buildings, information and communication technologies, and manufacturing.

You will work for the Climate Change Division (“CSD/CCS”), which is part of the Climate Change and Sustainability Sector (“CSD”). This team is responsible for advising IDB management and developing policies, strategies, operational guidelines, and programs on issues relevant to the sector, as well as related areas. In addition, CSD carries out relevant sector research, analytical work, sector practices and case studies on climate change and sustainability. As a division of CSD, CSD/CCS provides support: (i) in the mainstreaming of climate change in the actions and operations of the IDB group and (ii) in the mainstreaming of climate change in the regional countries of the IDB group through support to the ministries of environment, planning, and economy and finance of the region. Both axes share the objective of strengthening climate policy at the subnational, national, and regional levels.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide support to project teams in the application of the Joint MDB Assessment Framework for Paris Alignment to IDB operations, and linking this assessment with the potential for climate finance, green finance and nature-positive investments at the IDB Group.
  • Advise the process of refining a technically consistent application of PAA frameworks across the IDB Group.
  • Assist in the systematization of lessons learned and data gaps in the process of assessing the PAA of operations, while pursuing other climate change goals in different sectors and subregional contexts.
  • Extract main conclusions from the PAA work across sectors such as: energy, transportation, water and sanitation, agri-food systems, buildings, information and communication technologies, and manufacturing.
  • Assist the PAA coordination in harnessing this knowledge to collaborate with the Knowledge, Innovation and Communication Sector (KIC) and the Vice Presidency of Sectors (VPS) in the: a) development of programs to build capacities that support the PAA of future IDB operations, maximizing contributions to climate and nature; b) where there are information gaps in the PAA assessment of operations, ensure efficient linkages with the knowledge agenda of CSD/CCS and other departments and divisions.
  • Liaise with other areas of the IDB, such as the Environmental and Social Solutions Unit (RMG/ESG) and the Environmental and Social Risk Management Unit (RMG/ESR), in developing joint training and communication initiatives to strengthen the application of the ESPF in support of the PAA of operations.
  • Support other technical matters related to PAA of operations and further advance this agenda at the Bank.

What you’ll need:

Education:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in economics, natural resources management, sustainable development, public policy, international development, urban planning, or other fields related to international climate finance and relevant to the responsibilities of the role.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years of relevant professional experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience in climate change and environmental topics and policies. Professionals must have field experience in Latin America and the Caribbean; preference will be given to professionals that have worked for government and/or international development organizations.
