UNV - United Nations Volunteers
Details
Mission and objectives
UNFPA is the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. Our mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.
UNFPA’s goal is to achieve universal access to sexual and reproductive health, realize
Reproductive rights, and reduce maternal mortality to accelerate progress on the ICPD
Agenda, to improve the lives of adolescents and youth, and women, enabled by population dynamics, human rights, and gender equality.
In 2018, UNFPA launched efforts to achieve three transformative results, ambitions that promise to change the world for every man, woman, adolescent and young person:
1. Ending unmet need for family planning
2. Ending preventable maternal death
3. Ending gender-based violence and harmful practices
UNFPA recognizes that innovation is a key accelerator to achieve these results. UNFPA will harness innovation to meet tomorrow’s challenges and boost its impact, especially in addressing furthest behind populations, and leverage opportunities, social capital, funding and technology by (a) strengthening the corporate innovation architecture and capabilities, (b) scaling up innovations that have proven to be effective and impactful, (c) forming new partnerships and connecting with relevant innovation ecosystems, (d) strengthening and leveraging financing for innovation, and (e) expanding communities and culture for innovation.
Context
UNFPA Jordan launched its new Country Programme Document (CPD) for the cycle 2023-2027, which introduces a strong commitment to integrating climate change into its overall programming, recognizing the critical role that climate change plays in shaping the health and well-being of communities, particularly women and girls. The UNV will be crucial in enabling such programmatic innovation, including by supporting UNFPA Jordan in four main programmatic focuses:
– Strengthening resilience of vulnerable communities: UNFPA Jordan is working to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities to the impacts of climate change, particularly women and girls. This includes providing education and awareness-raising activities on climate change, supporting access to clean water and sanitation, and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
– Addressing gender-based violence (GBV) and climate change: The CPD recognizes the linkages between gender-based violence (GBV) and climate change, and UNFPA Jordan is working to address this intersectionality. This includes providing psychosocial support and protection services for survivors of GBV, particularly in areas affected by climate-related disasters.
– Supporting policy and advocacy efforts: UNFPA Jordan is working to support policy and advocacy efforts related to climate change and reproductive health. This includes advocating for policies that promote sustainable development, and working with government and civil society partners to integrate reproductive health and rights into climate change adaptation strategies.
– Strengthening partnerships: The CPD highlights the importance of partnerships in addressing the complex challenges of climate change. UNFPA Jordan is working to strengthen partnerships with government agencies, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to promote sustainable development and address the impacts of climate change.
