Clinical Lecturer/Honorary Specialty Registrar in Oral MedicineJob PurposeThis is a fixed term 6 years post to support the teaching and research activities of Oral Medicine within the Dental School. The post comes with a NTN for oral medicine specialty training.It provides an opportunity for training a junior clinical academic as part of capacity building for the discipline of Oral Medicine within the Dental School. Clinical training will be a major focus of the Lectureship in order to ensure the appointee can successfully complete a Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training (CCST). The duration of training may be reduced by up to 2 years if eligible and agreed through the ARCP process.Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesClinical training:To undertake a specialty clinical training programme as approved by the SAC in Oral Medicine, leading to the award of a CCST and engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate. Rotations to appropriate departments in related medical disciplines will be arranged within NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and in other relevant locations as required.Undergraduate teaching:On average, there are around 90-100 undergraduate BDS students each year. The appointee will be required to prepare and deliver lectures and seminars and participate in examination and assessment duties. The appointee will also be required to undertake assessment of courses within recommended timescales and to provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.Clinical teaching:This will include direct instruction and supervision of students participating in clinical oral medicine. The appointee will also participate in assessment of students and develop effective working relationships with students, responding appropriately to specific learning support needs.Postgraduate teaching:The appointee will be required to prepare and deliver lectures and seminars and to participate in examination and assessment. The appointee may also be required to undertake clinical supervision.Research:The appointee will be expected to engage with other research-active academic staff members to assist in the delivery of the research strategy of the Dental School – https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/dental/research/Additional Duties:The appointee may be required to undertake other duties such as: membership of committees, administrative duties, participation in working groups, mentoring of students or other relevant duties at the request of the Head of the Dental School or the Section Head.Please note that as part of your application you must address and demonstrate how you meet EACH of the essential/desirable criteria.Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and ExperienceKnowledge/Qualifications/TrainingEssential:A1. Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) qualification or equivalent dental qualificationA2. Eligible for registration with GDC and fully registered by the time of appointment.A3 Be eligible to work in the UK.A4. Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies from a UK Dental Foundation Training Programme or equivalent.A5. Demonstrable competencies required at the end of a UK Dental Core Training Programme Year 2; evidenced by one of the following:a) By post commencement of satisfactory RCP outcome or programme completion/certification of UK DCT2/3 post which commenced on or after August 2016.b) National Certificate of Dental Core Equivalence (NCDCE) at the time of application.A6. Good understanding of the principles and relevance of research in evidence-based practice.A7. Demonstrated understanding of the principles of audit/clinical governance/quality improvement.A8. Demonstration of a commitment to the specialty and realistic insight into the specialty and the demands of a career in Oral Medicine.Desirable:B1. Hold a Fellowship in Dental Surgery (FDS), Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) or Diplomas of (MFD) or Joint Dental Faculties (MJDF) or other postgraduate dental qualification.B2. Registered medical degree/qualification with GMC and Licence to Practice.B3. Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements (e.g. Degree, Award).B4. Membership of appropriate specialist societies/associations.Skills:Essential:C1. Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English, to enable effective communication to translate dental topics with patients and colleagues and certified by one of the following:a) Undergraduate dental training undertaken in English.b) Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) results showing a score of at least 6.5 in each domain (speaking, listening, reading, writing), with an overall score of at least 7.0, to be achieved in a single sitting and within 24 months of the time of application.c) If none on the above, must provide alternative supporting documentation of language skills.C2. Demonstrates good patient care skills.C3. Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems.C4. Capacity to communicate effectively and sensitively with others.C5. Ability to discuss treatment/oral health options with patients, stakeholders in a way they can understand.C6. Effective communication with colleagues across the whole dental team.C7. Ability to prioritise clinical need.C8. Demonstrates appropriate technical and clinical competence and demonstrates evidence of the development of diagnostic skills and clinical judgement.C9. Ability to analyse multiple factors and demonstrate a range of approached to problem solving.C10. Demonstrated effective judgement and decision-making skills.C11. Capacity to take in others’ perspectives and treat others with understanding; sees patients as people.C12. Demonstrates respect for all.C13. Capacity for originality and innovation.Experience:Essential:E1. Has evidence of experience in more than one dental specialty/ clinical setting, including experience of Oral Surgery, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery or one of the additional dental specialties at DCT level or equivalentE2. Ability to deliver evidence-based teaching.E3. Evidence of participation in audit/quality improvement/service evaluation.Desirable:F1. Has worked clinically for a minimum of 3-months (WTE) working within the scope of practice of a dentist within previous 2-years, excluding any period of statutory leave.F2. Record of publication in refereed journals.F3. Conference presentations/posters.F4. Evidence of leading at least one quality improvement project.F5. Evidence of delivering undergraduate or postgraduate teaching or teaching Dental Care Professionals.F6. Previous experience of mentoring students and/or staff.F7. Diagnostic experience in an Oral Medicine unit at DCT level or equivalent.F8.
