About usThe Department of Forensic and Neurodevelopmental Sciences (FANS), in the School of Academic Psychiatry at the IoPPN, is one of Europe’s largest research groups and one of the few teams in the world bringing together leading experts in brain development and pro- and anti-social behaviours. We believe it is essential to investigate the determinants of normal development in order to understand abnormal behaviour (or illness). We bring together expertise in basic animal models, the latest neuroimaging techniques and the social sciences. We study the genetics, epidemiology, psychopathology, neurobiology and psychopharmacology of neurodevelopmental and externalising disorders across the lifespan.About the roleThis new post for a Clinical Lecturer in Forensic Psychiatry is a full-time position in the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London (IoPPN-KCL), based within the Department of Forensic and Neurodevelopmental Sciences. The 10 session post will be split 50:50 between academic sessions (5) with the Forensic and Neurodevelopmental Sciences department at KCL and consultant forensic psychiatric sessions (5) within forensic services at the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust.Academic sessions: This is an exciting opportunity for a person with an emerging research profile to shape the King’s Health Partners’ research strategy for mental health in adults with neurodevelopmental disorders and offending behaviours. The successful applicant will develop novel ‘translational’ approaches that bring new insights into mechanisms leading to symptoms/ conditions associated with neurodevelopmental disorders and offending behaviours in childhood and/or adulthood, and undertake a higher research degree (MD or PhD). The post holder will be expected to develop high standing at the national level in research as established by outstanding contribution to its advancement through publications and record of grant funding.The successful applicant will contribute to the educational programmes offered by the Department. It is crucial that the successful applicant helps in the successful delivery of our existing Forensic Mental Health MSc and develops their own teaching and training portfolio. The successful applicant will contribute to Module 1 on the Forensic MSc (Prosocial and Antisocial Behaviours across the lifespan) and co-lead Module 3 (Statistics and Research Methods). The successful applicant will also contribute to the development of new Modules within the BSc in Psychology and Criminology.Clinical sessions: The successful applicant will be a consultant in forensic psychiatry with the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust, working in the Ward in the Community (WiC), a locked forensic rehabilitation ward at Lambeth Hospital. The 5 clinical sessions will consist of 3.5 direct clinical care sessions, and 1.5 sessions for supporting activities. The Ward in the Community is a 13-bedded male locked forensic rehabilitation ward and the only non-secure forensic inpatient ward in SLAM. It provides an important bridge between secure services and community services, focusing on treatment with ‘least restriction’, ‘testing out’ and ‘positive risk taking’.This is a full time post (40 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.About youTo be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:Essential criteria1. Full GMC (Specialist Register) / NMC / other relevant body registration with valid license to practice2. CCT in Adult Psychiatry (Forensic Psychiatry preferred)3. Research experience in a field of relevance to antisocial behaviour4. Knowledge of the field of sMRI and fMRI data collection in antisocial populations5. Advanced knowledge of typical neurodevelopment, and neurodevelopmental conditions6. Ability to write grant applications, complex reports and/or scientific publications7. Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills and ability to work as part of multidisciplinary teams8. Evidence of postgraduate educational experience of teaching and supervisionDesirable criteria1. Evidence of developing management and leadership skills2,. Active involvement in knowledge dissemination activities3.
