Clinical Research Practitioner

Bristol Vaccine Centre (BVC) is a team of doctors, nurses, administrative and laboratory staff working together to develop new, better ways to prevent and treat infectious diseases. We conduct clinical trials to evaluate novel drugs and vaccines and carry out clinical research studies to shed light on the naturally occurring carriage of bacteria and/or viruses in healthy individuals, and how this changes in illness.

We are seeking applications from motivated, reliable and hard-working individuals for the role of Clinical Research Practitioner in our friendly team. You will support a study looking at respiratory infections presenting to primary care, and will be based at one of our “hub practices” (Little Stoke & Avonmouth), supporting recruitment across participating GP practices in the Bristol area. You will conduct research visits at the practices and participants’ homes to obtain consent, collect samples and complete questionnaires with patients. The ability to drive and transport the required equipment for home visits is essential (use of public transport is not a realistic option).

  • Screen patient lists/notes and contact those potentially eligible
  • Explain study and obtain informed consent
  • Carry out research visits to collect samples (respiratory swab, saliva, urine)
  • Assist participants with the completion of questionnaires and symptom diaries
  • Extract data from medical records and carry out data cleaning/quality checks
  • Respond to participant queries and expressions of interest
  • Contribute to project delivery to time and target
  • Ensure work is carried out in line with regulatory and legislative requirements
  • Make a positive contribution to the team by assisting colleagues
  • Experience explaining research and conducting informed consent discussions
  • Experience obtaining samples from patients/study participants
  • Experience in research administration in a University or NHS setting
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (ICH GCP)
  • Responsible approach to own work, and able to work constructively with others to achieve team targets
  • Ability to travel independently (UK driving license and car) is essential to be able to conduct home visits across the Bristol area
  • Ideally, experience of using REDCap databases (or similar)
  • The ability to speak languages other than English would be advantageous, as the study aims to be as inclusive as possible

Contract type: Open-ended with funding for 12 months (until 31/08/2024)

Work pattern: Full time

Grade: G

Salary: 28,929- 32,411 per annum

School/Unit: Bristol Medical School

Shift pattern: 35hrs/week

This advert will close at 23:59 GMT on 01/08/2023

We recently launched our strategy  to 2030 tying together our mission, vision and values.

The University of Bristol aims to be a place where everyone feels able to be themselves and do their best in an inclusive working environment where all colleagues can thrive and reach their full potential. We want to attract, develop, and retain individuals with different experiences, backgrounds and perspectives – particularly people of colour, LGBT+ and disabled people – because diversity of people and ideas remains integral to our excellence as a global civic institution.
