We work with our partners in education, research and health care for the greater good of the local, regional and global community.PositionThe Clinical Research Specialist supports a variety of research programs and activities within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD). This includes contributing to research impact assessments, evaluating faculty research performance, and assisting in the preparation of a variety of reports.This role also involves engaging with research funding programs and other initiatives within the Office of Research such as supporting internal funding competitions and award competitions. Direct supervision is provided by the Director Research & Innovation, with additional input from the vice-deans researchDutiesThe Clinical Research Specialist is responsible for providing support to the Vice-deans Research and Director Research and Innovation in the following areas:

  • Researcher support: The Clinical Research Specialist works closely with the faculty Vice-Dean of Research (Clinical), Director of Research and Innovation and senior research partners to assess and proactively anticipate researchers’ needs, and coordinates, facilitates, designs, develops, and /or delivers faculty-specific, competition-specific research proposal, development support designed to increase Faculty success rates.

Specific tasks:

  • Assists with onboarding and orientation of clinical researchers to the Faculty. Provides 1:1 assistance to clinical researchers in navigating research operations across the University and with external; stakeholders. Organizes and coordinates webinars, research events, and workshops in collaboration with the Office of Research and the College Research partners.
  • Proactively identifies potential issues and offers creative, researcher-focused solutions where possible and within the appropriate policy/best practices framework.
  • Provides strategic advice, coaching and hands-on assistance for the development of grant applications/proposals to researchers from idea through to submission, including strategizing on how to leverage funding and take advantage of other opportunities to bring in more research funding at the individual researcher level.
  • Grant Data Reporting: Planning and reporting on FoMD research grant data, including analyses of federal and provincial grant funding, research chairs, and other relevant research programs.
  • Policy Support: Defining and implementing analytical work to support research policies, including internal research funding adjudication, research program start-up funding allocation, and indirect cost revenue.
  • Performance Metrics: Coordinating the development of meaningful metrics for grant applications and program reviews. Liaises directly with faculty and research groups.
  • Data Integrity: Identifying sources of data and liaising with internal and external stakeholders to ensure data accuracy.
  • Reporting Tools: Developing and maintaining reporting tools and briefing materials on FoMD research programs to support executive leadership.
  • Documentation Preparation: Preparing spreadsheets, reports, and briefing materials for review by the Director Research & Innovation, Vice-Deans Research, and Faculty Research Committee.
  • Reporting: Collaborating with the Director of Research and Vice-Deans Research to plan, prepare, and organize reports related to the activities of the Office of Research.
  • Funding Competitions: Supporting internal FoMD funding competitions, including planning, releasing call information, and acting as a point of contact for information.
  • Award Competitions: Identify and disseminate information about award opportunities to relevant faculty members. Serve as a central point of contact for faculty members regarding award opportunities. Support the internal selection processes to identify and nominate the most suitable faculty candidates for awards and competitions. Coordinate the preparation and submission of award applications and supporting materials.
  • Ad-hoc Requests: Fielding and responding to ad-hoc requests as needed.
  • Additional Duties: As required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Educational Background: Master’s degree in health research with experience in statistical research and analysis.
  • Experience: 1-2 years of experience in research funding and performance analysis in an academic environment. Experience with clinical trials, and clinical research. Experience in developing, writing, and/or editing research funding applications/proposals and a solid understanding of federal and provincial research funding environment and funding agency mandates, culture, opportunities and guidelines.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in statistical research methods, relevant computer applications (e.g., PeopleSoft, FARM, Excel, PowerPoint), bibliometric analysis tools (e.g., Web of Science, Scopus), and knowledge of the health research funding environment in Canada.
  • Interpersonal and Organizational Skills: Experience working independently within a large institutional environment and demonstration of effective collaboration with a variety of individuals and groups.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex results clearly. Superior interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively.
  • Organizational Skills: Excellent organizational and project planning skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional Knowledge: Familiarity with University website systems is an asset.
